Research over the last 10 years has shown that funders often cause as many problems as they solve. These “funder-created obstacles” are a barrier to nonprofits achieving their intended impacts. Emily Teitsworth and Kate T. of the Honnold Foundation share steps they've taken to improve their grantmaking, based on trust-based philanthropy. These include: -Annual open calls for proposals: They offer equitable access to funding opportunities that don’t depend on personal relationships. They eliminate the need to be part of the “in” crowd to receive funding. -Accessible and transparent applications: Their application form is simple, and the process is laid out clearly so applicants know exactly what to expect. -Project-based, unrestricted, and multi-year funding: They encourage and trust these partners to use the funds for what they know they need and to adapt their projects as circumstances evolve. -Reduced reporting requirements and shared metric development with grantees: By collaborating on what they measure, Honnold Foundation makes sure that the information helps all stakeholders and tells the story of both expected and emergent impacts. What else could a funder do to make the grantmaking process easier, more efficient, and equitable for nonprofits? #Grantmaking #TrustBasedPhilanthropy

I love this article. It is such a thoughtful perspective that gets at the heart of what #trustbasedphilanthropy is all about: ?? Trust goes both ways (it's not just about funders trusting grantees) ??? It's about much more than flexible funding - it's about investing in organizations' long-term success ?? Nonprofits need runway to plan ahead for abrupt shifts that will affect their funding - please don't pull the rug out from under them! ? Collaboration is key. Such important insights from Ryan Ulbrich and Tivoni Devor at Arabella Advisors on how reimbursement-based grants may be at odds with equitable-based practices and how nonprofits that may receive these once-in-a-generation funds and still move forward with equity-based practices. Great insights for #ggrf funders.
Reflections shared with my Arabella Advisors colleague Tivoni Devor on how philanthropy can unlock a historic windfall of public funding to accelerate impact nationwide.

In philanthropy, intermediaries and fiscal sponsors are the crucial links connecting donor resources to overlooked causes and marginalized communities. They pool funds, provide support, and absorb risks, enabling grassroots groups to focus on their core mission. At the recent Human Rights Funders Network Festival, rich discussions shed new light on fiscal sponsorship. Here are some key insights: Shift Power by Embracing Risk: Large donors should take on more uncertainties, simplifying applications and providing unrestricted funding. Build Trust: Trust must flow both ways, ensuring intermediaries can effectively support grassroots groups. Promote Collaboration: Avoid competition by fostering partnerships and shared learning among intermediaries. Expand Risk Appetite: Donors should provide more flexible, multiyear funding.
