You’ve touched on such an important point here! The difference in career-driven attitudes between U.S. and UK students in the sports industry is something I’ve noticed too. In the U.S., internships and hands-on roles seem to be an integral part of the university experience, with students often graduating with 2-3 years of experience under their belts. The professional leagues and collegiate athletics offer a vast range of opportunities, and universities emphasise networking and career fairs, which makes it easier for students to build connections early on. In the UK, it feels like students have to work a lot harder to carve out those opportunities themselves, as structured placements and sports pathways aren’t as prominent. That said, I think this highlights the importance of gaining experience through grassroots organisations, volunteering, and networking.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers says that students with internship are more likely to be male, white students who are not first generation, and students who are not recipients of Pell grants. Northern Essex Community College is working to disrupt this pattern, making internships available to all it community college students, including those in liberal arts. Last year, I asked one of my past college admission students to share her input as a freshman in college. Her advice is excellent advise for those in high school as well. "Go to the club fair, browse, and make yourself aware of what’s out there. They’re a good way to get to know people, and I have even found out about internship opportunities through clubs I have joined." Juniors and Seniors, don't wait until you're in college to expand your passions. The experience you gain now could benefit your admission into college, as well as any scholarships you might receive.
