Exploring South Asian histories through a multi-media lens, yesterday’s talk at the Royal Ontario Museum left me with much to reflect on. "Holding the Past Close – The Many Shapes of South Asian Histories" featured an insightful conversation between Deepali Dewan, Aanchal Malhotra, and Ahsun Zafar, delving deep into how we capture, archive, and share stories of the past. Each speaker brought a unique perspective on how South Asian communities understand their histories. From Aanchal Malhotra’s oral histories of Partition to Ahsun Zafar’s vast digital storytelling via Brown History, it became clear that we’re constantly reshaping our relationship with history through new mediums. The past isn’t static. It’s not something we just read in books or archives. It lives in the stories we tell our children, the photos we share, the memories we cling to. It evolves with every retelling. Our histories are shaped by diverse voices, and there’s always more to uncover beneath the surface. Whether through personal accounts, photography, or archives, the conversation on how we understand and remember the past is as dynamic as the communities that lived it. A big thank you to the speakers for guiding this journey into the past, and to the Dan Mishra South Asia Initiative for supporting this important dialogue. #SouthAsianHistory #OralHistory #ArchivingThePast #Storytelling #TorontoEvents #ROM #BrownHistory

??? "My works are themselves archives," says Nil Yalter, a sentiment echoed throughout our latest project, ArchivorumArk. Dive deep into the heart of history with Ana?s Auger-Mathurin as we explore Nil's groundbreaking work, where art meets memory, and every piece tells a story of struggle, resilience, and the human experience. ?? From the vibrant streets of Paris in the '70s to the poignant voices of migrant workers, Nil's art is a living testament to those caught between worlds, their stories woven into the fabric of her creations. It's more than art; it's a journey through time, an archive of lost voices and forgotten tales. ?? In creating an archive of archives, we venture into a meta-archive, a reflection on the act of remembering itself. It's a dialogue between past and present, a web of meanings that asks us to reconsider our relationship with history. With Nil Yalter leading the way, we embark on a quest to understand the role of the artist as an archivist of life's ephemeral moments. What, and where is home? This informal discussion will focus on the idea of displacement. What exactly is being displaced? The person? Their collective memory? Their history? And in their new surroundings, is the displacement still present? Three panellists with different backgrounds will discuss these issues and more. Literary readings will be interspersed during this discussion. Moderator: Gabriel Schembri. Panelists: Irene Chias, Murad Shubert, and Stephen Lughermo. https://lnkd.in/eAm6QVzv

New article! I've written a detailed examination of Titian's use of drawing for his narrative works. It attempts to reassess what we know in light, especially, of new technical discoveries regarding the underdrawing and revisions to his paintings. It's in the excellent volume "Venetian Disegno - New Frontiers c. 1420-1620" edited by Maria Aresin and Thomas Dalla Costa, with Genevieve Verdigel, out from Paul Holberton in London. https://lnkd.in/d2ixVsz4

Unlikely Monuments exhibition curated by Giovanna Calvenzi From 31st January to 7th February 2024 Istituto Storico Parri, Bologna Promoted by Istituto Storico Parri and Lavì City on the occasion of Art City Bologna 2024 On show part of an ongoing series of monuments dedicated to women who have had a public role or a relevant role in the public sphere, known, unknown, or forgotten. These monuments are undoubtedly unlikely, like many of the places in which they are placed in this series, which is nothing but imaginary cataloguing as much as the monuments themselves. What is also proposed is a reflection on the meaning of "monument", on how we are remembered and how we would like to be represented, perhaps through other forms than the patriarchal ones that monuments have assumed. The series is presented as an excerpt from a catalogue.

????An inspiring conference for our Collectors! Last Friday, two of our co-founders had the pleasure of attending the conference at Villa Vauban led by Patricia De Zwaef, titled?"Identifying the Original: Provenance, Signatures, and Tips for Collectors." Here are some key takeaways that are particularly valuable for Collectors: 1???Authenticity and provenance?are two different concepts. Authenticity refers to the origin of the artwork, while provenance tracks its history since its creation. 2?? An artwork can be?authentic without clear provenance, and conversely, an artwork with clear provenance is not necessarily authentic. 3?? To authenticate an artwork, techniques like?scientific analysis?or signature studies may be employed. 4?? Provenance is crucial in supporting the?authenticity of the piece?and adds to its value. It can be reconstructed through historical research, private archives, or bibliographic studies. From this conference, we learned that authenticity and provenance go hand in hand, with each element being an important piece of the puzzle. Patricia de Zwaef also provided?valuable insights on identifying bronzes and engravings, which we will share in more detail in future posts. Stay tuned! ?? To ensure acquiring an original, you can also either consult an expert or simply purchase from the primary market. ???A heartfelt thank you to Patricia de Zwaef?for the exceptional quality of the conference, as well as for her passion and kindness. #villavauban #art #expert #provenance #youngcollectorsclub #collectors #collectorsclub #conference #collectorstips

I am very excited to share our recently published book ‘Colonial Heritage, Power, and Contestation: Negotiating Decolonisation in Latin America and the Caribbean’, edited together with Dr. Naomi Oosterman and Rodrigo Christofoletti. In this book, we had the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary and international group of researchers and practitioners who are engaged with contesting the enduring legacies of colonialism in cultural heritage, bringing forward decolonial perspectives aimed at challenging the colonial structure of power. Divided into four focus areas (Paths of Decolonisation; Restitution and Repatriation of Culture; Museums, Discourse and Power; and Frontiers of Decoloniality), the book presents a wide range of topics ranging from the repatriation and restitution of cultural heritage, decolonial practices around monuments, museums, and education, to colonial exceptionalism and diasporic movements. The chapters in this book provide innovative theoretical and empirical contributions to the study of (de)coloniality, which we hope will enrich the current international debate on the contestation of colonial legacies in cultural heritage. If you want to know more about the book, please do not hesitate to contact us! If you want to get the book, you can do so with a 20% discount until March 1, 2024 (physical and ebook versions) with the code ‘ACHS20’. ?
