Signed and completely agree. Thank you PORTO ROCHA.
In my opinion, I would go as far to say paid pitching shouldn't be happening either, unless the compensation is worth the effort. Very rarely does a paid pitch fee ever cover anything — You can't pay $5 to try the main course at a 3 Michelin star restaurant, just to see if you want to continue to eat there?
All pitching (free & paid) is built on a distrust from both sides and is a hangover from advertising agency methods in the 80's and 90's, whereby if they won a pitch it was worth multiple millions in fees. Unless both sides trust and respect each other, which is done through a capabilities, past work and references proposal, followed by a signed contract and deposit then it very rarely works out.
Designers need to meet the client, do proper strategy and work together to solve challenging issues. This cannot be achieved through a pitch process sprint, paid or unpaid. All we're doing is throwing shit against the wall, hoping our shit sticks longer and smells nicer than another agency's ??. You can't solve meaningful problems, speak honestly with one another or do great design work this way.
Unfortunately there will always be an agency that is perfectly happy throwing shit at the wall though.
Let’s unite. Free pitching must stop! –– Go to nofreepitches.com, sign, and spread the word. — Thanks to our friends at?PORTO ROCHA?for starting this.
