"The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor." Juneteenth #juneteenth #marcusgarvey #antirevisionisthistory #jimcrow Introduction: Immediately following the Civil War and adoption of the 13th Amendment, most states of the former Confederacy adopted Black Codes, laws modeled on former slave laws. These laws were intended to limit the new freedom of emancipated African Americans by restricting their movement and by forcing them into a labor economy based on low wages and debt.?Vagrancy laws?allowed blacks to be arrested for minor infractions. A?system of penal labor known as convict leasing was established at this time. Black men convicted for vagrancy would be used as unpaid laborers, and thus effectively re-enslaved.

Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the reading of General Order #3 by General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865 – marking a formal end to the institution of slavery in the United States as it existed until that point. "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer." General Gordon Granger, June 19th 1865 in Galveston, Texas [Source: https://lnkd.in/e5bqjNNp] While marking this important event in U.S. history, it’s also important to know that so much more needs to be done to achieve actual equality of rights and ending systemic racism. As a reminder, although the 13th Amendment to the Constitution ended slavery as it existed, it did not end slavery entirely. That amendment reads: "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." [Emphasis added]. Celebrate what’s been achieved – but keep working to complete the goal of ending racism! #juneteenth

Polarisation under a specter of violence is familiar territory in the United States. After winning the War of Independence against Britain in 1776, slavery became a central element in creating the constitution – an unresolved issue that led to civil war in 1860. Even after that victory, it took another 100 years for the 1964 Civil Rights Act to be passed banning discrimination. More recently, George Floyd, Black Lives Matter and Donald Trump on immigration show that the issue is far from over. ?The forging of democracy in the U.S. has taken more than 250 tumultuous years as protests, court rulings, elections and wars have molded this banner of governance that the West holds up as a beacon to the rest of the world. The end result might be good, but surely there's a better way of getting there.

On December 6, 1865, the United States took a major step forward with the ratification of the 13th Amendment, officially abolishing slavery. While the Emancipation Proclamation declared freedom for enslaved people in rebel states, it was not enough. The 13th Amendment made it law, ensuring that slavery had no place in the United States. This victory did not come easily. It took relentless efforts, debates in Congress, and the determination of President Abraham Lincoln to make it happen. The 13th Amendment marked the start of a long fight toward equality and justice, one that still echoes today. Let us reflect on this historic moment, honor the progress made, and recognize the work that still lies ahead. #13thAmendment #AbolitionOfSlavery #AmericanHistory #CivilRights #NeverForget #HistoryMatters #FreedomAndJustice

Democrats like Mayor Andre Dickens are working with Gov. Kemp to lock up activists in Georgia & universities like Emory protesting for peace, organizing bail funds, and for being against carceral cop city. Calls to my senators to intervene go unanswered. We don't need "unity" with neoliberal fascist policies, we already have that. All the party machine sickos who thought Biden illegally restricting asylum and that garbage "bipartisan" immigration sellout deal would help democrats with their working class base... The oligarchs & "center" in this country have corrupted American institutions into their most decrepit undemocratic form yet. We need progress like a universal pathway to citizenship, Medicare for All, STAR Policing, rent limits on corporate landlords, voting rights, Housing For All, Indigenous representation in congress, ERA, Abolish/radically reform the Supreme court, and end Citizens United. Honestly at this point I think we need a progressive workers constitutional convention to make any progress nationally and actually protect our liberty. The working families of France revived the spirit of 68 to fight for progress in their election. I support Michael's call for the President to pass the torch ASAP and have a democratic convention. #passthetorch #peace #georgia https://lnkd.in/gM8ci5hK

“You may choose to look the other way, but you can never say again that you did not know.” - William Wilberforce. Following the efforts of 1807, slavery was finally abolished in 1833 and made illegal by the Human Rights Act of 1998. However, despite these advancements, modern slavery persists. In 2021, an estimated 50 million people were living in situations of modern slavery according to the Global estimate for modern slavery. Approximately 27.6 million of those people were in forced labour and 22 million in forced marriages. What action can you take can we collectively take to prevent this? ? Report such acts to authorities or relevant organizations. ? Do not engage the services of underage children or individuals in exploitative conditions. ? Ensure fair compensation for workers based on their labor worth. ? Stay informed about the signs and forms of modern slavery. ??Share and follow for more Sources: ?? Free speech ends where harm begins. Yes.
"The ACLU has always been at the forefront of defending individual rights, particularly the right to free speech. However, it is essential to acknowledge that the sanctity of this right does not extend to permitting abuse of power in workplaces. Free speech ends where harm begins, and the Supreme Court has long recognized limits on speech that incite violence or threats or create an unsafe environment. The same principles should apply to speech that creates and perpetuates a toxic work environment, which is, fundamentally, an abuse of power manifesting as psychological harassment." — End Workplace Abuse spokesperson Kimberly Williams https://lnkd.in/eifAzyK8

Read the full article ?? https://loom.ly/Jj5qadY Given America’s history with slavery and eventual emancipation, especially the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment, the average person might be left with the impression that slavery was only ended thanks to the efforts of a powerful nation-state. In fact, one might even go as far as to assume that slavery could only be brought to an end through government policy and enforcement. What this misses is the important fact that governments were key enforcers of slavery such that slavery could never have expanded and remained to the extent it did absent government policies and enforcement.
