Concerns about the AI powered battlefield aren’t theoretical anymore-such weapons are already in use, says the Defenseone opinion piece linked below. Takeaways: 1) “In just the last few months, the battlefield has undergone a transformation like never before…Robotic systems have been set free, authorized to destroy targets on their own.” AI systems “are determining which individual humans are to be killed…and even how many civilians are to die along with them.” 2) “Ukraine’s front lines have become saturated with thousands of drones, including Kyiv’s new Saker Scout quadcopters that “…are designed to operate without human oversight.” 3) The article also indicates Israel is utilizing multiple AI systems. The first, known as The Gospel, “considers millions of items of data, from drone footage to seismic readings, and marks buildings in Gaza for destruction….” A second system, code named Lavender, ingests “everything from cellphone use to WhatsApp group membership to set a ranking between 1 and 100 of likely Hamas membership.” Top-ranked targets are tracked by a third system called Where’s Daddy?, “which sends a signal when they return to their homes, where they can be bombed.” 4) Attempts to preemptively ban “killer robots” failed for the same reason that open letters to ban AI research did: “The tech is just too darn useful. Every major military is at work on their equivalents or better…” 5) “(P)ast industrial revolutions dramatically altered not just the workplace, but also warfare…World War I brought mechanized slaughter, while World War II ushered in the atomic age…Yet AI is different than every other new technology in history… No one had to debate what the bow and arrow, steam engine, or atomic device could be allowed to do on its own. Nor did they face the "black box" problem…” 6) “(A)s in business, we need to…govern the use of AI in warfare…not just mitigating the risks, but also ensuring that the people behind them are forced to take better care in both their design and use…understanding they are ultimately responsible, both politically and legally.” Dave’s take: While regulation of chatbots has been front and center, AI battle tech, particularly autonomous weapons, has not gotten much media attention, and little to no push for oversight is evident. As these weapons increase in sophistication and lethality at an alarming rate, and they are put into service in actual combat, shouldn’t global policymakers make it an urgent priority to reckon with the ramifications and establish ethical and legal guardrails for their use? Killer AI is Inevitable! It has been nearly 3 years with the bombshell introduction of GenAI into our daily lives by OpenAI. I strongly believe that this technological advancement is nothing like before and it will change both the history and human society deeply. In my view GenAI is so much of a deal breaker that its we should start counting the years since the introduction of ChatGPT. And I need no further digging to prove my idea, as every day a ground breaking achievement is made on the front. We all see how good (even sometimes better) at interpreting and producing human language the GenAI was. How it was creating miracles when it comes to arts, once we thought it solely belonged to us in the universe. And as our fears were growing calmed down by the discourse that even the AI was incredible when it came to critical decision making points there would only be humans, controlling the AI. But to be honest, technological advances are directly linked to human greed and fierce competition. It is the competition that decides the outcome, most of the time anyway. And in just three years we have come to the point where AI will kill real people without any human interventions. The most significant advancements in AI are increasingly seen on the battlefields. "Until recently, a human would have piloted the quadcopter. No longer. Instead, after the drone locked onto its target — Mr. Babenko — it flew itself, guided by software that used the machine’s camera to track him." As we advance in our understanding and utilization of AI, it’s both awe-inspiring and unsettling to witness its application in warfare. AI is transforming one of humanity's oldest occupations. Chatbots are fun toys. Massive, autonomous, real-time data analytics and decision making will transform many industries. In all the chatter about AI improving productivity observers and commentators ignore one of the most globally destabilizing "productivity" enhancements. Under the proverbial radar, AI is being deployed in support of one of humanity's oldest occupations: warfare. The day when the fog of war will lift for ever and combat will become brutally efficient is coming..., soon. "AI?systems, coupled with autonomous robots on land, sea and air, are likely to find and destroy targets at an unprecedented speed and on a vast scale." Why is this efficiency so dangerously destabilizing? "...as AI?gives a clearer sense of the battlefield, war risks becoming more opaque for the people who fight it. There will be less time to stop and think. As the models hand down increasingly oracular judgments, their output will become ever harder to scrutinise without ceding the enemy a lethal advantage. Armies will fear that if they do not give their?ai?advisers a longer leash, they will be defeated by an adversary who does. Many Ukrainian companies working on a major leap forward in the weaponization of consumer technology, driven by?the war with Russia. The pressure to outthink the enemy, along with huge flows of investment, donations and government contracts, has turned Ukraine into a Silicon Valley for autonomous drones and other weaponry. What the companies are creating is technology that makes human judgment about targeting and firing increasingly tangential. The widespread availability of off-the-shelf devices, easy-to-design software, powerful automation algorithms and specialized artificial intelligence microchips has pushed a deadly innovation race into uncharted territory, fueling a potential new era of killer robots. The most advanced versions of the technology that allows drones and other machines to act autonomously have been made possible by deep learning, a form of A.I. that uses large amounts of data to identify patterns and make decisions. Deep learning has helped generate popular large language models, like?OpenAI’s GPT-4, but it also helps make models interpret and respond in real time to video and camera footage. That means software that once helped a drone follow a snowboarder down a mountain can now become a deadly tool. In more than a dozen interviews with Ukrainian entrepreneurs, engineers and military units, a picture emerged of a near future when swarms of self-guided drones can coordinate attacks and machine guns with computer vision can automatically shoot down soldiers. More outlandish creations, like a hovering unmanned copter that wields machine guns, are also being developed. The weapons are cruder than the slick stuff of science-fiction blockbusters, like “The Terminator” and its T-1000 liquid-metal assassin, but they are a step toward such a future. While these weapons aren’t as advanced as expensive military-grade systems made by the United States, China and Russia, what makes the developments significant is their low cost — just thousands of dollars or less — and ready availability. Except for the munitions, many of these weapons are built with code found online and components such as hobbyist computers, like?Raspberry Pi, that can be bought from Best Buy and a hardware store. Some U.S. officials said they worried that the abilities could soon be used to carry out terrorist attacks.
