Europe’s #NewSpace is currently experiencing a real take-off ??. Several start-ups are born every month, drawing on academic excellence and the many international industrial champions in European countries. But they still lag behind the US. To date, according to European Space Policy Institute (ESPI), $6 billion has been invested in venture capital in the New Space industry in the United States, compared with $1 billion in Europe, highlighting the pressing need for a solid and expert support in this field. On Thursday, 3rd October 2024, Impulse Space, a prominent provider of in-space transportation services, successfully concluded its $150 million Series B funding round. This round was spearheaded by Founders Fund, with additional investments from existing backers Lux Capital and SpringTide Ventures, as well as newcomers like DCVC. Furthermore, Airbus Ventures, Alumni Ventures, and Balerion Space Ventures also contributed to this funding round. Impulse Space is a prominent player in the field of in-space transportation services, specializing in swift and cost-effective delivery of payloads from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), Geostationary Orbit (GEO), and beyond. With flight operations set to commence in 2026, the company has recently secured a $150 million Series B funding round, which was spearheaded by Founders Fund, and included participation from existing investors Lux Capital and Spring Tide, as well as newcomers like DCVC. Projects must primarily take place in South Australia and focus on 'NewSpace' technologies. The first round of grants opens this month, targeting projects that demonstrate a clear commercial pathway, from proof-of-concept to delivery of space capability. This initiative follows South Australia's strategic moves in the space industry and aims to bolster local innovation through international partnerships, ensuring a swift transition of space technology to operational use. South Australian Space Industry Centre, in collaboration with the Defence Innovation Partnership, is steering this venture to foster growth and access to global markets for the local space sector.
