Here's why most marketing teams are struggling to retain customers in 2024: (And it's costing you millions) If your customer retention strategy looks like: - Rule-based segmentation - Reactive engagement - One-size-fits-all campaigns You might not know it… But you're running a retention-losing process. Here's the problem: 1. It focuses on what marketers see – not what customers actually do Example: Just because a customer hasn't bought in 60 days doesn't mean they're churning. They might be waiting for a specific season, saving up, or researching alternatives. 2. You rely on manual analysis – missing critical early signals Example: Your team manually tracks customer behavior monthly. By the time you identify a customer showing signs of losing interest, the customer is already gone. The warning signs were there weeks ago. 3. You "think" you know why customers leave – but you're guessing Example: Assuming price is the only reason for churn, when in reality, it could be poor onboarding, lack of personalization, or unmet expectations. — Here's the predictive retention approach: 1. You should watch your competitors for sure because it’ll help you understand the customers and you’ll know what works and what doesn’t. At the same time, you shouldn’t be too concerned about your competitors and try replicating everything that they do. In other terms don’t run after feature parity with your competitors. ? What is Feature Parity? - the state where two or more software products have the same essential features, functions, and capabilities. Having a comparable set of features and capabilities as your competitors has actually some benefits too: ? ·?Eliminate/reduce the competitive advantage of your competitors. . Consistent user experience – It’s easy for the clients to switch to your product. ·Allows you to position your product effectively. – When you have differentiating features apart from the common features ·Mitigates churn. ? While it may be good to have all the features of your competitors because of the above advantages, you should not lose focus on the actual customer problem and get caught in a Trap. Why targeting feature parity may be bad for you: · When you’re too focused on what the competitors are doing and trying to imitate them, you may lose track of what the customers actually need. · You will lose the opportunity to innovate and differentiate yourself from the rest. ·?It will kill the creativity of your product teams as all they need to do is just copy. ·?In this process, we might as well replicate the competitor’s mistakes when we blindly copy their features. · You get stuck in the build trap where you focus only on the output (Delivering features) and not on the outcome (delivering value) ·?It may lead to customer dissatisfaction as you’re not actually solving their pain points. ·?Less competitive advantage as you solve problems exactly like your competitors. ? Sometimes, in the rush to compete with others, we might hastily create half-baked features without considering the true value they deliver. It’s more beneficial to have a half kick-ass product than whole half-ass product. When the core of a feature is poorly built, we end up applying patches whenever an issue arises, leading to a fragmented user experience. Instead, we should focus on creating features with robust foundations that provide value to both customers and our business. To achieve this, we must avoid fixating on competitors and prioritize understanding our customers’ needs.
