Following on from my Pokemon themed post, now I've been through it... ??Today, the Government published its Clean Power 2030 Action Plan?? ? The proposals reflect the guidance from the @National Energy System Operator on how Great Britain should reach clean power 2030 (defined as creating a system that will see clean sources produce at least as much power as GB consumes in total over the whole year and at least 95% of GB’s generation). ? Key takeaways include: ?? A Stronger Role for Government: The plan acknowledges the Government's expanded role in guiding the energy system’s transition, laying out clear expectations for key technologies across national and regional levels. ?? Grid Connection Overhaul: Long-awaited reforms to the “first come, first serve” grid connection process. ?? Regional Technology Targets: The annex outlines capacity expectations for each technology by region, a significant departure from how developers and investors look at potential projects. ? Reforms to the queue have been wanted and needed for a long time, and there’s no doubt we need to accelerate deployment if we’re going to decarbonise at the pace needed. ? However, this document, with the outline of which technologies will go where to 2030, signifies more of a shift in how the energy system will be delivered away from market and planning forces alone to a much more centrally driven approach.? ? The document also features some key updates on other reforms... ??We now expect policy decisions from REMA,the review of electricity market arrangements , (consultation on which has been ongoing for years) to be confirmed mid-2025. ??Progress on enabling consumer-led flexibility, including market access, retrofit finance for batteries, and updates to measuring instrument regulations. ? This is a big change for energy system participants, and though clarity and timeframes are still needed on elements of reform, particularly at the consumer/flex end of the market, the capacity by region alone should make for interesting analysis over the holidays. ?
