“I accidentally found my dream job.” This was said to me today by a former educator that is now in our industry. He went on to express how after he retired from his educator role of 30+ years, he poked around and applied for a laborer position at a paving company, and it changed everything. Yes, you read that right. At this stage in his life, he actively looked for another job... IN CONSTRUCTION...AS A LABORER! A physically demanding job. I’ll be introducing you to my new friend, Jim, very soon as we are working together on a couple things. I left with this smile on my face. This was my first in person meeting for Blue Collar Open Book and I was in my new company gear. I couldn't have asked for it to go better. For now, I wanted to get your thoughts regarding a new pool of potential employees. What about the group of early retirees (those in law enforcement, teachers, etc.) that now have time they don’t know what to do with? Maybe they feel financially stable and are willing to try a new industry… Would they potentially be more dependable employees at this stage in their life? Step 1) Employer hiring. You made the decision to add more staff and now you need to get the word out. Create a "Wish List" of how & why you want the new applicant to fit with your company. Perhaps you have the happiest staff in the world. One must consider the "Bee Hive" mentality. Do you want "Killer Bees" or "Honey Bees". "Killer Bees" react extremely to the hive being disturbed. "Honey Bees" are much less reacting to a disturbance. If you advertised for a driver you might want to request a "Clear Driving Record". Some applicants try to get hired hoping the employer does not check the license. Consider reviewing this with your staff. #BestHire #Kindness #KnowWhatToExpect #BeeHiveMentality
