Meet our current #Summer2024 #intern, Matthew Bond, George Mason University class of #2026. Why FHWA Central Federal Lands? CFL offers a very hands-on experience where not only do I get an in-person introduction to the #constructionfield, but I get to do so in our #nationalparks and other amazing areas! How Your Experience Has Been So Far: This #internship has gone beyond what I’ve expected I’ve had the #incredibleopportunity to be on the construction site almost daily shadowing the #siteinspectors and learning directly from our #projectengineer. What have you been working on? I’m mainly working on the scenic loop repair project in Theodore Roosevelt National Park south unit in #NorthDakota. A typical day on site I shadow the inspectors and get to learn about project operations, design implementations, and everything else there is to know about a construction site. At the end of the day, I write a daily report on what I’ve observed and learned throughout the day. What have you learned so far? I’ve learned much about #roadwaydesign, how they’re built, and the challenges associated with the process. By being included in project meetings I have gained a basic understanding of the administrative side of project operations as well. 30 DAYS Challenge with Adedamola Okoya-Johnson DAY 23: Importance of Construction Site Visit Growing up in a developing environment, I was surrounded by construction sites. This exposure gave me a basic understanding of building materials and construction methods, which significantly helped me during my architecture theory classes. Seeing these processes firsthand made concepts clearer, in ways that textbooks alone couldn't. This is why internships and industrial training (IT) are so important for architecture students. They provide the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in real-world situations and gain practical insight that enriches learning. In my opinion, practical experience is essential for anyone pursuing architecture or any other hands-on field. How has visiting construction sites helped you during your internship? #Construction #ArchitectureStudent #MyArchitectureJourney

This season can be particularly rough on second and final year students who are looking for career opportunities. Employers have different timescales, different application processes, dates, requirements etc which can be tricky to manage. For the last few years, The Land Collective have been creating and sharing trackers with our community members, so they can focus on creating quality applications and not on figuring out which applications are open or wondering what the application process will feature - it has proven very successful, so we've decided to change it slightly. Starting this year, this tracker will be live, meaning it will be updated regularly and will feature graduate programmes, apprenticeships, summer internships and pre-university opportunities such as insight days for students currently not at university yet. The types of employers featured in this tracker are: Civil engineering firms, property consultancies, estate agents, developers, planners, construction companies and more. If you know students who would find this helpful, please share with them! In my aim to become more comfortable on camera, I've filmed a bit of an intro and walkthrough ??

The debate is over! Interns who have great hands-on experiences like to tell everyone about it. In this video, Nolan, a WisDOT Civil Engineer and former intern, talks at a roundabout project on the State Highway 60 Roadway at Eagle Drive in Jackson, Wisconsin. It is just another day in the life of thousands of construction workers across the U.S. As a construction intern Nolan shared the value of watching something get built while being outside rather than sitting in the office all day. I love this quote: “Working this summer felt less of like a business and more of like a learning community. Everyone was willing to help me. Everyone was willing to teach me. I really enjoyed that and I felt like it would be a great way to spend the rest of my career.” He got to see different job sites and experience different things. He saw that as very valuable in assessing what he wanted to do with his future and chose WisDOT. Principles were most likely at the heart of the way the internship was constructed. So, add that to your punch list. I acknowledge WisDOT for designing a wonderful hands-on internship program and engineering this 2-minute video. They have cemented a positive impression on me and everyone who surveys their work. No need to go in circles in a roundabout. The debate is over. Hands-on experiences are valued by interns. P.S. Now, what would your intern say about their internship with you? No judgment, just look. #management #innovation #internships #wisconsin

Is your life a loop? Remembering the days during my internship 2023(July-nov) I was around the ppl who were from different states and different backgrounds and proficient in what they were working after seeing them I questioned myself what did I even learn in the 4.5 years of my college life? I am so dumb and do not know how things are working but the people around me are good everyone is helping and learning from each other I used to always feel nervous and question myself that I should improve a lot I have learnt a lot I'm always grateful for the ppl these were the ppl who helped me during my thesis and also currently Do you think how much I even improved? As I told I improved a lot not even 1% I have to learn a lot more ————————————- The same things happening currently i am again around the ppl the ppl who are proficient and still learning but do you know what changed? Attitude towards seeing the things I tell myself it is okay to be dumb and learn. At the same time have your own respect.what you are good at others might not ,find it and write it in your journal or notes because these things are not going to end it's a whole life process I will be meeting proficient people even in the future so please know your strengths and weakness to protect yourself because you are not just dealing with our fellow architects you have to deal with the clients and everyone in the future and need to always stay strong #lifeofarchitect

Intern Spotlight! ? Name: Amaresh Kumar Tavva What school do you attend? I am getting my Masters of Science in Construction Management at Clemson University. How did you find your internship here at Ruby-Collins? I found this internship through one of my friends who was an intern last year! Then I applied online and started the interview process. Why did you choose a major/internship in the construction industry? I have a passion for working on real and practical projects. There is a deep sense of pride and satisfaction that comes with building structures from seeing a project through conception to completion. What do you do outside of school for fun? I love reading books, traveling to new places, learning how to invest, and watching lots of movies. What is your favorite part of your internship so far? My favorite part of this internship is working in the trenchless division. Being involved in a tunneling project has always been one of my dreams. What was your childhood dream job? To work as a Marine Engineer! #TeamWork #RubyCollins #Georgia #Intern #Internship #ApplyOnline

On 11th September 2024, I successfully completed my summer internship with #BrittainHadley. I would like to extend a special thanks to the incredible team at #BrittainHadley for their continuous support and guidance throughout the internship. During this time, I had the privilege of working on a variety of projects that allowed me to develop invaluable skills such as #problemsolving, #criticalthinking, #attentiontodetail, and #communicationskills. One of the most notable projects I contributed to involved replacing combustible cladding with non-combustible cladding on a seven-story building, and another project was carrying out repairs to a listed building, which I worked on from start to finish. I also carried out multiple site inspections across different locations to ensure that each project was progressing smoothly and met high standards. Writing detailed site reports was a key part of my role, allowing me to further develop strong communication and technical writing skills. Throughout my time at #BrittainHadley, I gained #projectmanagement, #teamwork, #communication and #siteinspection experience, enhancing my understanding of the construction process from inception to completion. I’m excited to apply these skills as I continue to grow and take on new challenges. #Internship #Construction #BrittainHadley #ProblemSolving #ProjectManagement #BrittainHadley #LearningAndGrowth #BuildingSafety #StructuralEngineering #CommunicationSkills #CivilEngineering

Surveying My Way: Lessons from First year to Internship I. As I complete my internship, I reflect on my journey from First Year to Internship. If I want to go detailed, I'd give a pretty interesting story and a really long post but I’d just cut to the chase and highlight a few high moments, dull moments, challenges and lessons. Stay with me. PS:This post will just reflect my journey in the First and Second Year. The thrill of First Year was surreal. It wasn’t my dream course but I discovered that as time went on, I grew to love the profession. The courses I offered during this time didn’t really seem difficult to me. I was just lectured on basic science core subjects and surveying fundamentals. Most of the things I learnt were from my personal study and with God’s blessings I aced this year. I’d say it was my best year after all. Second Year was to me, just neutral. We did a few science subjects as well as surveying courses but we started focusing more on our profession proper. It was my second semester this year I felt a little emotion because I nearly failed a course. Till today, I tell myself it’s the euphoria of my First Year that got me carried away. Ideally, the efforts you put in your First Year and consequent Years should be progressive otherwise you’d have a fall back so bad you may not recover . I learnt my lesson anyway but my grades dropped by point five points. Continued in the comments ??
