?? Tigst Assefa holds the women’s marathon record of 2:11:53 ?? World No 1 is confident she will run sub-2:10 marathon ?? First time men’s record dipped below 2:10 was in 1967 Ethiopian Tigst Assefa set the world record at the Berlin marathon in September 2023 with a time of 2 hours 11 minutes and 54 seconds. She shaved off more than 2 minutes from Kenyan Brigid Kosgei’s record set in 2019. Assefa’s time is 4:29 faster than Peres Jepchirchir’s new record for a women’s-only marathon (2:16:16), set in London in April. The World No 1 has said she is strongly confident she will run a sub-2:10 marathon. World Athletics recognises times set in both mixed and women’s-only marathons. In 2011, the governing body decided that only times from women’s-only marathons would count, citing concerns that male pacesetters provided female runners with an ‘unfair advantage’ and threatened the ‘overall integrity of the sport’. By 2021, the ruling was that both categories would be recognised but tracked separately. The first time the men’s record hit below 2:10:00 was in 1967. The current record time for men is 2:00:35, held by the late Kelvin Kiptum. My latest article for JRN covers the importance of rivalries to the sport of rowing. From the success of the events such as The Boat Race we can see not only how integral theses rivalries are to the sport but also how they can attract a new audience and hopefully grow the sport of rowing.

Last weekend BREWYD Athlete Luke Willian competed in the World Triathlon Championship Series in Weihai China.?Luke clocked the fastest bike time and placed 6th?in the race, moving him into 5th?position in the WTC rankings. ? By his own admission Luke didn’t perform the way he wanted to in Paris.?This result shows that he belongs at the top of the table with the best triathletes in the world.? ? Luke’s story is one of resilience, he embodies our name – Break Records Even When You’re Down. ? When the WTC commentators at Weihai turned their attention to Luke and his performance during the bike leg, their retelling of his story and the team of believers that surround him couldn’t have been better scripted. ? Scenic Rim Regional Council and key government stakeholders today reiterated the region’s push as the best location suited to host a number of Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games events, including the renowned rowing and canoeing competitions. One of the region's key natural assets and home of Queensland's State Rowing Centre, Lake Wyaralong, has repeatedly been named as a potential venue for the rowing and canoeing events. Whilst other Councils have also shown interest in hosting rowing and canoeing events, Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Mayor Tom Sharp said he believes that the Scenic Rim region has one of the best venues in the country to host such sports. “We take pride in our spectacular region and the world-class facilities that are available throughout its 4,500 square kilometres. This is an opportunity to showcase the splendour of our region to the world and we have the calibre of facilities needed to stage such events.” “We are proud to have worked with Rowing Australia and Rowing Queensland on our bid to host these events during The Games, both of whom consider Lake Wyaralong as the best rowing site in Queensland." Mayor Sharp added that the region’s proximity to major hubs like Brisbane and the Gold Coast makes it an ideal location to host events such as rowing and canoeing. He said Lake Wyaralong, as a Queensland State Rowing Facility, stands out as the best choice for these competitions. Hosting more than 500 athletes at the Lake Wyaralong facility for the 2025 Queensland State Championships this weekend further demonstrates the sport’s support for this well recognised location and of the region as a true hub for rowing excellence. “We are always excited to bring events to Wyaralong, home of the Queensland State Rowing Centre. This weekend we welcome over 520 athletes from across the State to compete in the Queensland State Championships in the beautiful Scenic Rim,” said Matt Bialkowski, Chief Executive Officer of Rowing Queensland Ltd. “The support of the Scenic Rim Regional Council has been exceptional since the venue was first established in 2015, and the partnership has gone from strength to strength as our events have grown.” “2024 saw close to 14,000 race entries across 25 events, attracting over 25,000 spectators to the facility, and we look forward to working with Council as we progress towards the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Mr Bialkowski. State Member for Scenic Rim, Jon Krause said the Queensland State Rowing Centre is a venue held by the rowing community to be pre-eminent among rowing venues in Queensland. It has been the “Olympic venue apparent” for rowing and sprint canoe events since 2021 and holding these events in the Scenic Rim ensures a legacy from Brisbane 2032 for the region. Racing the reef - a blog post. Fremantle Triathlon Club asked me to do a race write up for the recent newletter and I thought I'd also put it on my blog with a few additions and some extra photos etc. Triathlon is very much about consistency, showing up and putting in the effort in training, being organsied to fit everything in and prioritise your time, managing your mindset, having a plan for race day to manage the controllables and strategies for the uncontrollables. It's a joy to hang out with a bunch of age group athletes at an event like this who are all committed to putting in the best performance they can, and just as enthusiastic about supporting their teammates. Much like being in a really great organisational environment where values align. One of the things l like about triathlon as well is that it's always been an inclusive sport - equal race distances and equal pay across genders for the professionals, plus there's always a para division in the world championship events. Kudos to World Triathlon for putting on such a well-run event. The multi-sport festival spanned 12 days with racing every other day, and thousands of athletes from around the world competing - the whole thing ran like clockwork and the atmosphere around town was fantastic. You're on a high from an experience like this for a long time afterwards. Completing a major goal like this also reignites your enthusiasum to grow and evolve on your return, in lots of areas of life, not just in sport. At least for me anyway!

Dear Chris Noel OAM Rowing Australia Life Member Sydney University Boat Club, Why wasn't the 2022 NSW AAGPS 1st VIII race stopped when Sydney Boys High School were forced off the regatta course and into the Rowing NSW Umpires speed boat wash? Didn't Sydney Boys High School deserve a safe and fair race under the Rowing NSW Laws of Racing? Didn't they matter as much as The King's School crew? Why wasn't the race re-rowed as per the Rowing NSW Laws of Racing? Why didn't Mr Michael Smith Sydney Grammar School AAGPS Rowing Convenor inform all the schools involved that a protest was been lodged, and re-row would be held? Why didn't the Rowing NSW Boat Race Officials uphold the Laws of Racing during and after the race? Was undue pressure placed upon the Umpire and Regatta Referee? How were the coaches awarded Rowing NSW Schoolboy coaches of the year? A position that you support? One of the coaches is now a Rowing Australia National Team Coach. Do you support that position too? As you support the outcome of the 2022 race? And why didn't the expert commentator, Mr Simon Pennington OAM St Joseph's College Hunters Hill, mention that six of the eight racing crews had failed to complete the race? However he did congratulate The King's School crew, and the AAGPS Convenor Mr Michael Smith Sydney Grammar School, and the Rowing NSW Umpires, for winning in what was a smoothly run regatta. That doesn't sound correct to me, does it make sense to you under the Laws of Racing? Was this incompetence, ignorance of Laws of Racing, or complicity in an event that had gone off script and outside the bounds of sportsmanship, the rules, and Code of Conduct? “It comes with a prize”, a little story about averages. ? On the first of August the Dutch Women’s four won gold at the Olympic rowing event by a margin of 15 centimetres. Half of this crew (Tinka Offereins and Hermijntje Drenth) were part of a talent identification and development program I set up together with Nico Rienks, Pieter Paul van Oerle, Korik Alons and many significant others. ? The program aimed at attracting tall and strong women. Preferably with a sporting history in other sports and wanting to aim for the Olympics. The call was for women over 1.80 meters and around 80 kilos. This is not - of course - your average height and we identified this demand by looking at the most successful women in rowing and our own experience. Aiming for an above average performance, we searched for extra ordinary athletes. This immediately lead to criticism. Even from well-known names in Dutch rowing, most of them have never been close to a medal and were not meeting the requirements. ? What the criticasters did not see was that the requirements were part of a method. We aimed for way above average performances and for that we needed way above average athletes. ? These two women especially were verbal, challenging and demanding. They simply required more. Had their own challenges, did not always communicated well and were a ‘handful’ for us coaches. These raw talents came with a price. ? Within this not so average group, a new average was created. And also this average needed to be beaten. In two/three years the two women developed and showed they were above average and were asked to join the national team. With the appointment of the new head coach of Dutch rowing Eelco Meenhorst, the system was set up to beat averages. Doing more than others. Great structure and governance. Training harder, more polarized than others. Again not average. ? Within the national team, both athletes were under average and developed step by step towards average and above; by thoroughly executing the training program. Initially hanging by a thread to stay on the national team. The last average that needed to be beaten was the average of world class rowers in the international rowing community. And they did last year by becoming a World Champion. And they did this year by winning the Olympics in the closest race I have seen the last twenty years. ? If you require extra ordinary performances, you need extra ordinary people. These extra ordinary people, whether they are high performing athletes or colleagues in your team are not average. So they might be a bit strange, act and think different than you are used to and may require you to change your management style. But please bear in mind that they can do extra ordinary things. They come with a prize. ?
