Get to Know Your Students- By Margherita Miserandino, MA CCC-SLP Lead Speech-Language Pathologist Getting to know your students is crucial for their success and overall well-being. Start by asking questions about their likes and dislikes, as students perform better when they feel heard and understood. This approach builds rapport and helps you identify their learning styles and emotional cues. When you notice a student looks upset, engaging them by asking how they feel and offering a space to talk about it if they wish is important. Additionally, showing genuine interest in their lives fosters a supportive therapeutic environment, encouraging students to be more open and communicative. This level of attention and care can significantly enhance their educational experience and contribute to a positive and productive learning atmosphere. #StudentSuccess #SLP #SpeechTherapy #EducationalSuccess #StudentEngagement #LearningStyles #TherapeuticEnvironment #StudentWellbeing #EducationMatters

Meet Kayla Kaplan, MA, CCC-SLP! We asked Kayla how she became interested in working with people who stutter: "During my undergraduate education, I had the opportunity to work with college students who stutter covertly. I realized then that despite the presence or absence of disfluencies, people who stutter may still experience a profound impact. This showed me that there is a really important role for speech therapists in helping people who stutter, beyond working on fluency. Since then, I knew I wanted to pursue further education about stuttering." What does the Spero Ally of Stuttering? Seal mean to Kayla? "I chose to become an Ally of Stuttering? SLP because it is important to me to learn about the lived experience of those who do stutter in order to provide the most effective, most informed, client-centered treatment. Especially as I am not a person who stutters, I want to be able to demonstrate my commitment to my clients and students." Related service providers, especially speech-language pathologists (SLPs), play a critical role in transition planning for students on IEPs. I had the privilege of chatting with Kate Grandbois and Amy Wonkka this morning while recording an episode of their SLP Nerdcast. One of the items discussed included what SLPs can do to support students with transition planning, especially elementary-aged students. There are several critical skillsets that SLPs focus on that impact safety, success, and independence in adulthood: (1) Communication/Language – Being able to communicate needs, thoughts, emotions, and wants intelligibly to unfamiliar individuals is critical. Understanding increasingly complex vocabulary, directions, and questions that come up as you progress through school and into adulthood is also essential. (2)?Social Pragmatics – These impact social connections and friendships, as well as success in adult learning, working, and living environments. (3)?Self-Awareness and Advocacy – Understanding your needs, strengths, interests, and preferences is central to transition planning. Being able to advocate for your needs effectively also requires self-reflection, communication, perspective-taking and confidence. (4)?Literacy – Transition planning is about more than academics. But skills like reading, writing, (and numeracy) substantially impact a student’s future ability to work competitively, access learning and training programs, and live with increased independence. (5) Executive Functioning – Skills like task and time management, flexible thinking, using memory strategies, self-monitoring, and decision-making are all skills that impact success with “adulting” but can be developed at younger ages. I’m sure that I’m missing some skills here that the speech-language superheroes who work with students in and out of schools are able to support. I am truly grateful to be able to collaborate with related service providers from a variety of backgrounds when transition planning with students. #TransitionPlanning #SLPGoals #SLP #IEPs #SpecialEducation #CommunicationSkills #SocialPragmatics #SelfAdvocacy #LiteracySkills #ExecutiveFunctioning #ElementaryEducation #RelatedServices?

Comprehensive Efforts Needed to Develop Health-Promoting Learning Environments Source: Science Daily Mental ill-health among students in higher education is a growing problem globally. Most efforts implemented to address ill-health involve individual treatment and adjustments to pedagogy. But more can and needs to be done at a structural or environmental level for higher education institutions to ensure learning and well-being among all students. https://bit.ly/4eR0IKc
