This week, I had the fantastic opportunity to come together with other educators from across New Jersey to learn all about integrating Youth Participatory Action Research into the classroom. While this training was very fruitful for my dissertation research (with 5th graders), I left thinking about integrating YPAR into the elementary and early childhood classroom. This got me thinking about what type of skills and competencies we can focus on developing in our youngest learners so that when they enter middle and high school, they can be agents of their research. They can draw data-supported conclusions and inform decisions that impact their lives. This is how youth can become Citizens of the Now. However, this year, I am teaching preschool (I teach during the day and conduct my dissertation fieldwork after school). It was challenging and exciting to brainstorm ways that 4 and 5-year-olds can conduct their own research. How can they "collect data" and then "analyze" the data? We all know little kids love grabbing our phones and tablets and taking pictures all around them. They might not be able to write full sentences yet (although many can!), but they certainly can ask questions and even conduct a survey or interview (with support). They love questions! And they love finding connections between different observations. They love talking about big visuals and pictures. That sounds like data analysis to me... What do you think? Can preschoolers conduct research?

Words Kindness Day is celebrated today- believe that kindness has the power to change the World! Be kind! Children do not just attend school for academic purposes. Schools should be a safe space for children to learn social skills that are essential for interacting in society beyond the school gates. Almost every school mission and vision statement includes the importance of learning to be kind, and compassion is listed as one of desired character standards both for students and staff. Teaching kindness can be difficult both to teach and to understand, especially if your students are on the younger side (egocentrism is completely normal for young children!) There are no step-by-step guides on how to teach kindness, and the most effective way of teaching kindness for students is to model and reinforce it over and over again until kindness becomes the norm. Children need to witness kind and charitable behavior from the adults in their lives that they love and respect- being a role model is a proven way to teach about kindness. Our recent November PD session with Steve Barrett on pastoral care was both impactful and reflective. It challenged me to rethink my role not just as a teacher, but as a steady, positive force in my students’ lives. The session began with us recalling influential adults in our lives, which helped me reconnect with the power of a supportive presence. It then led us to consider one focus student—someone who could benefit from a deeper, more intentional connection. This exercise highlighted my potential to create a meaningful impact through authentic care and empathy. An excerpt from "The Invisible Classroom by Kirke Olson" hit home, emphasizing that human brains learn best in the context of loving relationships. This perspective reminded me how crucial it is for students to feel safe, seen, and valued. The questions we reflected on drove me to think about how I can make each student feel essential in our class: a) That they are loved and cared for, b) That they are appreciated, c) That each of them matters deeply to our classroom community, and d) That they mean more to me than the content I’m teaching. To make these ideas tangible, I came away with three simple but powerful strategies to bring into my teaching practice: 1. Morning Greetings: Meeting each student at the door with a positive welcome to show that they’re valued from the start of each day. 2. Empathy in Behavior: Recognizing student behavior as communication, not taking it personally, and responding with understanding. 3. Intentional Check-Ins: Making time to connect personally with every student within a few weeks, whether it’s asking about their family, noticing if they’re feeling down, or cheering on their latest interests. Lastly, "Priya Parker’s The Art of Gathering" reinforced the importance of intentionality in our interactions. The way we gather and engage with students can shape how they see their role in the classroom. As teachers, we model the values we want to instill; students observe our actions closely. This PD reminded me that by making each student feel valued beyond academics, I create a learning environment where they are willing to engage and thrive. It reaffirmed that my role is as much about human connection as it is about teaching.
