Bread & Roses is thrilled to acknowledge the huge win for the community that is the 76ers’ decision to abandon their destructive plan to build a new arena in Chinatown, and to remain in South Philly. Not only is this a major victory for the city, but it is also a stark reminder of the power and impact of community organizing. Bread & Roses grantees Asian Americans United (AAU) and Students for the Preservation of Chinatown (SPOC), to name just a few organizations working in this fight, stood tall and rallied for two years against the owners of the 76ers in their plan to dramatically change the landscape of historic Chinatown in defiance of the wishes of the community. It is due to the tireless work of organizers such as these that we can celebrate this win as a city, and as a movement.

The CSPDC is currently working on an update to the Town of Grottoes Comprehensive Plan. One focus for the update will be increasing civic engagement in the Grottoes community. This objective was originally identified in the 2023 Town of Grottoes Strategic Plan update, along with goals of establishing stronger connections and a sense of community in Grottoes. Research for the community facilities inventory portion of the Comprehensive Plan update confirmed that encouraging civic engagement would be a helpful priority for town officials. The idea that civil society organizations should be involved in wealth creation is still confusing to many in the civil society sector, particularly in the Caribbean. The idea and practice of community wealth creation is certainly not new. However, the fact that many still believe that civil society organizations should not make profit or create wealth confirms the extent to which we have been brainwashed by colonial/imperial forces and current elites. As the great Bob Marley said in Redemption Song (Bob Marley and the Wailers): "Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery None but ourselves can free our minds". The movement in the US continues to grow. https://lnkd.in/dTWA8GJY #justtransition #cooperatives #communityeconomicdevelopment #economicjustice #sustainablesociety #community #socialandsolaridityeconomy

Ministry reflections part three. A minister leading a church in community engagement can bring remarkable results. This brand of mission can be redemptive in many varied ways. Rather than being a model or method of mission, it can be simply brought back to embracing the opportunities to gather with and serve our neighbours. And people of good faith can join with people of goodwill (as well as people just finding their way on the journey of life) in creating activity and adding value to their community. I have been involved in a broad community youth work project, the management of a neighbourhood community centre, the development of a local Christmas event, a refugee support and advocacy collective, and match day participation with a local football/netball club. The difficulty for a minister comes when the time and energy taken up with such involvements are weighed against the expectations of certain church members who believe that such time would be better spent with their family and/or more religious activity - their own more negative or defensive attitudes to the world cutting in here. This is where the church needs to have no walls - the necessary openness and inclusiveness needs to be talked about a lot. This also points toward not even having formal membership - which tends to promote organisational thinking with a resultant us and them mentality. I could say more on this, and will!

It was great to chat with Seven Network news about the latest developments in the AFL - Australian Football League. It's great to see the AFL take a stronger stance towards players at the highest level of the sport and back it up with a commitment to greater education opportunities (shout out to the work Pride in Sport Australia has done with the AFL). Although the level of dedication to this increased education remains to be seen, it's a solid step in the right direction. There has been increased pressure on the AFL in recent years to do a major gesture such as a pride round - this is only part of the bigger picture. Pride Rounds and Games in my personal opinion, should be rewards for work that has been undertaken in the inclusion space. We need the AFL to continue taking a stance against all discrimination and to use it's influence to empower not only top tier clubs, but to empower community level and junior football inclusion initiatives all year round - not just in single events. We need education for boards, committees, players, coaches, volunteers. We need to provide people with the confidence and know how to back strong inclusion policies. From there, we need pride rounds and pride games to show our community that they are not only welcomed, but celebrated and supported. It's all part of a big puzzle, and although the AFL has lagged behind, it's great to see them making more of an effort to put the pieces together. I'd love to see the impact the AFL would have on Australian sport as a whole if it threw all it's influence and power behind tackling LGBTIQ+ discrimination. (This wasn't intended to be an advertisement - but if you're a club, AFL or otherwise, in Australia who wants to make change for LGBTIQ+ people, check out our Proud 2 Play Rainbow Ready Clubs program here: https://lnkd.in/e3zkMed5 It's an industry leading framework aimed at supplying community level clubs with education, policy advice and the development of a strategy and action plan that embeds inclusion at all levels of your club.)
Our Community Development Officer, Kade Matthews, will be chatting to Channel 7 news tonight at 6PM about the impact homophobia can have in sport in light of the recent suspension of Wil Powell by the AFL. At Proud 2 Play, we believe strong leadership, coupled with education and policy, is the only way to create a culture of respect for players of all identities. The action taken by the AFL shows that homophobic language will not be tolerated at the highest level of the sport - but further work must be done to build a culture of respect at all levels of the sport through education and policy development.
