Back in the day, Chicana activist #ElizabethMartinez called out the pitfall of #minority groups competing over who’s “got it worse.” Spoiler alert: everyone under the boot of #whitesupremacy deserves a fighting chance. We’re stronger together. Just look at the AAPI community!?They’ve a long history of building cross-racial coalitions, realizing that social justice is a team sport. From fighting alongside #Blackactivists in the #CivilRightsMovement to supporting #Latinx communities against police brutality, the AAPI community has always understood the power of solidarity. They know that dismantling oppression requires a united front, not a fragmented one. This AAPI Heritage Month, let’s celebrate the power of coalitions. Let’s ditch the “who suffers most” contest and join hands in the fight for justice for ALL. Black liberation is tied to Asian liberation, Latinx liberation is tied to Indigenous liberation – we rise together, or we fall one by one. So, shout out to the #AAPIcommunity for leading the way! Today, on May 17th, we mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). This day serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight for equality for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. While significant progress has been made, we face a growing anti-trans and anti-2SLGBTQIA+ movement seeking to erase our rights and dignity. An interesting question raised in the City of San Gabriel, California, as the city commissioners who promote forced outing policies consolidate their presence on the board of the local Kiwanis Club: Do youth in San Gabriel Kiwanis Club activities have privacy rights from the state constitution to be free of fear from forced outing and forced outing policies? If so, how can we assert the privacy rights of LGBTQ+ youth in small, scattered nonprofit organizations like the Kiwanis Clubs, which are sheltered and receive no oversight? (Kiwanis Clubs supervise and mentor the youth in the high school Key Clubs, "Service Leadership Programs.") Or, if youth can be subjected to forced outing in local nonprofit clubs, how can we help them to become aware of that danger before a moment of crisis arrives? Or do we change the culture? Or do we all step away? Or: Does Title IX apply to them, as they receive funds from taxpayers at the federal level through the privilege of their nonprofit status? Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that affects countless individuals and families. Recent statistics show an alarming rise in domestic violence incidents, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness, support, and intervention. As professionals, we have a responsibility to recognize the signs of domestic abuse and provide support to those affected. Whether through workplace policies, community initiatives, or personal advocacy, each of us can play a role in combatting this crisis.
