We are excited to offer this learning opportunity to our LinkedIn community. This month, we are furthering our rainforest education by encouraging students to take on the role of rainforest advocates. Our very own lead elementary teacher is currently volunteering in the rainforest and is open to answering any questions from students, providing firsthand insights. Our challenge is for students to create an informative poster, a presentation, or short video to educate others about what is currently impacting the rainforest and what can be done to protect the rainforest for future generations. This is a wonderful opportunity to educate and inspire your child on the beauty and importance of rainforests and motivate them to create a positive impact. Projects can be completed at any time, but the deadline is July 27th.? We would love for your child to tag and share their project here: @brat-virtual-academy #bratvirtualacademy

???? Tree planting season may be over, but the work to create new, permanent woodlands doesn't stop there! ???? At Avon Needs Trees, we care for our young woodlands long after the trees have been planted, which ensures they they have the best chance of survival and can deliver the benefits of carbon capture, nature recovery, and flood management long into the future. But we couldn't do this without our amazing volunteers who come back year-round to help carry out this vital work. In fact, it's a big reason why we have such outstanding tree survival rates - up to 93%! With over 45,000 young trees planted across our 4 woodlands in the past few years, there’s lots of tree care to be done to ensure their best chance of survival. Our young woodlands really are glorious in the spring and summer months, so why not join one of our upcoming volunteer days? ?????? Find out how you can get involved ?? https://lnkd.in/dj4RXmkJ #AvonNeedsTrees #GreatAvonWood #ClimateAction #NatureRecovery #TreePlanting #TreesforClimate #Volunteer #Volunteering #Reforestation #Bristol #Somerset #SheptonMallet #Wiltshire

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! This grant is open, but closing May 30th! **Green SchoolYards** The purpose of this grant type is to create green schoolyards to protect the health, well-being, and educational opportunity of children most vulnerable to increasing temperatures and extreme heat across California. Projects shall be centered around improving the environmental conditions and experiences for school children with the highest levels of co-benefits and all projects and project activities shall be connected to tree cover and nature-based activities. Projects will invest in nature-based climate solutions that deliver multiple benefits such as helping to alleviate extreme heat, improving the immediate environment for students as well as supporting outdoor learning and environmental literacy, while also reducing GHG emissions, improving functionality of urban forests, arresting the decline of urban forest resources, increasing climate change resilience, improving the quality of the environment in urban areas, and optimizing co-benefits to school children and surrounding urban residents. @calfirecareers Mackenzie Wieser - what do you think for working with school or parks? ?? Did you know #OurCounty has increased its annual budget for reforestation efforts by over 70% compared to 2021? ?? This has helped us maximize opportunities and double the number of trees planted at parks and green areas, as well as in roadways, at county buildings and in environmentally endangered areas. ?? The county is close to finalizing a contract with the USDA to implement a $10 million grant to plant trees primarily on streets in targeted areas over the next five years. ?? ?? ?? Programs like Adopt-a-Tree and Million Trees Miami are resulting in an additional 10,000 trees provided to residents to plant each year through free giveaways. ?? Last month, Miami-Dade County Office of Resilience was invited to a tree planting event with Coca-Cola Beverages Florida where 80 trees were planted at North Pointe Community Center. ?? ? Our Extreme Heat Action Plan aims to reduce excessive heat by expanding the tree canopy and adding more vegetation across urban areas. ?? ?? Our recent hedgerow surveying session with students from the?The Woodroffe School in Dorset?was full of energy and enthusiasm. There were some excellent comments from both students and staff including, "[I learnt about] different types of hedges, and the heights and width of hedges. I had a lot of fun and it was very interesting.” “[I learnt] how to start a hedgerow, good plants to use, how long they take to grow, what a good hedge looks like. Excellent session. Thank you." “[I learnt about] different micro climates of trees. It was fun to learn about hedgerows and trees.” 100% of the feedback forms reported the students had learnt something new about hedgerows, which is great, including tree leaf identification and the benefits of hedgerows to wildlife, humans, and helping to mitigate against the effects of climate change. Thanks to our project partner,?Dorset Climate Action Network; our project funder,?Lyme Regis Town Council; and Woodroffe School's staff lead for this project, Jim Johnson-Hills. Wishing you a buzzing National Urban Beekeeping Day! This celebration, originally promoted by the Detroit Hives organization in 2019, encourages community members in cities to practice apiculture as a way to help support primary pollinator species in urban environments where natural systems have historically been displaced, disrupted, or degraded. Along with the ecological functions, beekeeping also provides a range of other potential benefits to local communities. https://beesinthed.com/ (While some critics have cautioned that 'domesticated' apiculture adversely impacts wild bee species, carefully planned and managed urban beekeeping where wild bee colonies are not viable can help mitigate potential adverse impacts.)

Here’s another familiar face! Today we are spotlighting Harriet Simand as part of #VolunteerAppreciationWeek! Harriet is a retired teacher who loves gardening, travelling and dogs. ? 1.?How long have you volunteered with Evergreen?? ? This is my third year as a tour guide! 2.?What inspired you to volunteer with Evergreen?? ? I love the site, the nature and the historic buildings. I love feeling like I am in nature even though I am in the middle of the city. ? 3.?Tell us about your roles and impact as a volunteer.?? ? I am a tour guide for public and private tours. I also volunteer for different festivals and the craft club. I love meeting the public and sharing the unique history of Evergreen Brick Works with them. I have been coming here for years and had no idea about its history! ? 4.?What’s your favourite thing about volunteering at Evergreen Brick Works? ? I love interacting with the public, especially kids, and spending time with my fellow tour guides who are so much fun to hang out with. ? 5.?What’s the most important thing that you’ve learned from volunteering?? ? Interacting with people in nature makes everyone happy. 6.?Why do you think access to green public space is important? We live in a big city with lots of buildings and concrete. We often overlook the ravines and the plants and animals who live there. You can feel part of nature even if you live in a big city.

SATURDAY MORNING (AUGUST 24TH) at 9:30 AM our amazing Who I Am Foundation volunteers in #Albuquerque will be having our next Community Clean-Up (ABQ)! LOCATION TO BE DETERMINED. WE ARE OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS! Youth participation is strongly encouraged, so children are welcome to join! NO OPEN-TOED SHOES Cleaning up loose trash is one of the best ways to pitch in for your community and the environment. None of us like the sight of litter. Litter spoils the look of where we live but that’s not the only reason for picking up litter. There are a number of benefits from picking up litter that you may not have considered before. Volunteer-led projects such as these are one of the quickest, simplest, and least expensive ways to inspire more community spirit and civic action. A visually appealing community increases property values, attracts businesses, and improves the neighborhood's image. Beauty is one of the three most influential factors in community attachment, which means loyalty, to your particular town or city. Some research even shows that a nice-looking neighborhood promotes good behavior. Join us in keeping your community clean! For more information: https://lnkd.in/gJNjR4Ns #TeamWhoIAm_Albuquerque

Volunteering is Like Seed Sowing. You sow with an expectation to receive. ?? What kind of harvest am I hoping to get? ?? What kind of seed do I need to sow to get this harvest? ?? How long should it take? Farming terms, right? We don't just volunteer for roles at companies or events because we want to volunteer. ??We volunteer to hone our skills. ??We volunteer to get into the right environment for growth. ??We volunteer to build strategic relationships. ??We volunteer to add something tangible to our work experience or portfolio. You don't have to volunteer every time, be strategic about it. ?? A collection of my 2023 designs. P.S. How do you balance wanting to get paid for your services and volunteering? Let's discuss in the comment section.
