As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, we at Van Wey, Metzler & Williams reflect on the profound emotional impact lifelong injuries can have on individuals and families. It's crucial to acknowledge not only the physical challenges but also the mental health struggles that can arise from medical malpractice. In 2003, the Texas Legislature placed caps on the damages that patients can receive for the grief, anguish, and suffering caused by medical malpractice. This law significantly limits the compensation Texas patients can receive, regardless of the extent of their suffering. We believe this cap is unfair to Texas patients, who deserve full recognition and restitution for the hardships they endure. It’s time to reassess these limitations and advocate for laws that fully acknowledge and address the mental and emotional toll of medical injuries. ?? Brain Injury Awareness Week | 19 – 25 August 2024 ?? From 19-25 August, Brain Injury Awareness Week (BIAW) brings attention to the 1 in 45 Australians living with a brain injury. This year’s theme, "What’s your connection?", invites us all to reflect on how brain injury shapes lives and fosters connections among us. Despite its widespread impact, many Australians remain unaware or undiagnosed. BIAW 2024 encourages everyone to consider how brain injury influences their interactions with family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers in everyday life. Beyond raising awareness, this week also highlights the significant challenges faced by those living with brain injuries—limited access to government support, societal understanding, and the increased risk of homelessness or involvement with the justice system. As we observe Brain Injury Awareness Week, let’s all ask ourselves: What’s your connection? #BIAW24 #WhatsTheConnection #BrainInjuryAwarenessWeek ?? Synapse - Australia's Brain Injury Organisation

Tomorrow is International Self Care Day, but we think every day should be self-care day. As a community of victim-survivors, lived experienced advocates, loved ones or professional support people it is important to practice self-care. The research shows us that self-care helps to mitigate the impacts of trauma, vicarious trauma and burnout but it can be tricky to prioritise. Find out more about information about self-care and coping with trauma at fullstop.org.au.

This question was recently posed to Dr. Wolfelt – “Is the best and probably only way to get through complicated grief antidepressanTS" This is his answer: My short answer is absolutely not! Why? Because we know that antidepressants alone (even when indicated) are not an appropriate means to provide comprehensive support to someone in grief. In my experience, the biggest challenge is to train clinicians in what is called a “differential diagnosis” between the normal sadness/depression that often accompanies grief and that of a clinical depression where antidepressants may be an appropriate adjunct to one’s helping role. https://conta.cc/3YDgm6i

Yes, babies have mental health, and it's crucial for their overall development. Mental health in babies refers to their emotional and social well-being. Here are some key points to consider: Emotional Bonding: Healthy attachment between a baby and their caregivers is fundamental. This bond helps babies feel secure and loved, laying the foundation for future relationships. Responsive Care: Consistent and responsive caregiving helps babies develop trust and a sense of safety. When caregivers respond to a baby's needs, it promotes a healthy sense of self and emotional regulation. Early Experiences: Positive interactions and experiences during infancy, such as play, talking, and physical touch, support cognitive and emotional development. Negative experiences, like neglect or trauma, can impact mental health. Stress Response: Babies can experience stress, and their ability to cope with stress is influenced by the support they receive from caregivers. A nurturing environment helps babies learn to manage stress effectively. Developmental Milestones: Monitoring and supporting babies as they reach developmental milestones is important for their mental health. Early intervention in case of any delays or issues can make a significant difference. Play and Exploration: Encouraging safe play and exploration helps babies develop social skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. It also provides opportunities for emotional expression. Understanding and supporting the mental health of babies is essential for their growth into healthy, well-adjusted children and adults.

Recovery begins with a personal decision, a moment when individuals recognize that their freedom and well-being are worth fighting for. How can we as organizations facilitate and respect this crucial decision point? At our organization, one of the ways we support this critical moment is through comprehensive substance use disorder assessments, and we observe how other recovery organizations effectively use access initiatives to aid this process. We are dedicated to supporting each individual’s decision to begin their recovery journey. Reflecting on this commitment, we continually strive to enhance our support mechanisms and invite others in the field to consider their role in this pivotal process.
