The secret to achieving hard things is having the capacity to visualize so you can effectively work backwards. I see so many people in their work and in their lives aimlessly wandering in what feels like forward motions but really are strategies of hope. I myself have been guilty of this in my 83 years. What I've learned is that the more of powerful visualizer of the end point you can be, the more of a powerful practitioner of life and of your craft you will be. As you all know, I live by the Michelangelo quote: "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free." We all have something meaningful to contribute to this world. That's your angel trapped in the marble. It's your job to see that angel and carve until you set it free.

The secret to achieving hard things is having the capacity to visualize so you can effectively work backwards. I see so many people in their work and in their lives aimlessly wandering in what feels like forward motions but really are strategies of hope. I myself have been guilty of this in my 83 years. What I've learned is that the more of powerful visualizer of the end point you can be, the more of a powerful practitioner of life and of your craft you will be. As you all know, I live by the Michelangelo quote: "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free." We all have something meaningful to contribute to this world. That's your angel trapped in the marble. It's your job to see that angel and carve until you set it free.

"We know what we are, but know not what we may be" (Shakespeare) I have often watched my son, a FIS ski racer in the crisp air of early mornings standing on the sidelines of the frosted slopes, with a mix of awe and pride. As he prepared to confront the challenging course ahead, he closed his eyes, entering a world unseen to others. There, in the silence behind his eyelids, he visualized each gate, each turn, each leap. This ritual, seemingly a mere moment of concentration, was a profound testament to the astonishing capabilities of the human mind. Years later, my passion for healing rekindled, I find myself in a different arena but facing a similar challenge. My patients, unlike my son, are not preparing for a physical race down a mountain but a mental battle to leave the comfort of their couch. So i began teaching my patients to harness the same power of visualization that my son used on the slopes. Patiently each day I explain "When you visualize something—such as performing an action or achieving a goal—the prefrontal cortex becomes active and starts to plan and initiate the actions needed to achieve that visualization and your dopamine levels rise. This planning and initiation are crucial first steps in forming new habits. Subsequently visualization can strengthen the neural pathways in the basal ganglia related to specific behaviors, making it easier for those behaviors to become automatic. And by visualizing the positive outcomes of new habits, you can reinforce the desire to act in ways that are conducive to those habits. Imagine your reward - you will trigger a second peak of dopamine to help carry you towards it." I absolutely love Dan Goldin's post, as by believing in the angel within the marble of our own being, we start to chip away at what holds us back. The path from transformative ritual to habit formation is a journey, with the most important transformations occurring not in the physical realm but within the depths of our minds and souls. Subtle but powerful message on the need to visualize and working backwards. For hard tech companies this means visualizing the end state of the business at its highest TRL, CRL etc. and working backwards from the end state to yearly milestones. I see too many hung up on trying to get things perfect...because there just isn't enough data. You will never get it perfect... and you will need to adapt along the journey. I would argue that you can be a bit clearer about the final, mature state of your business in hard energy tech because there are plenty of incumbent examples to draw from.
