Life is a journey...and if you're part of a team you're on a journey together. It's amazing how many people do 'team building' as a one-off and expect to miraculously be a High Performance Team. To be great takes time, effort, and commitment. But it's worth it. We spent Friday with a team we've worked with for quite a while now and it's so rewarding to see how they are continuously developing to face changing challenges. They are so much more self-aware, aware of each other's differences and how they can stretch their leadership of a huge global brand. I often hear leaders (and employees) complain that they are always in "back-to-back-to-back" meetings, that they actually have no time to do their "actual" jobs. I chanced upon this Youtube video by Dr. David Burkus, where he talks about "Bursty Communication". "If you're always in meetings talking about the work, you're never actually doing the work! High-performing teams know how to come together, and know how to come in sync quickly, then how to move on to get the work that actually needs to get done, done." This makes a LOT of sense! My takeaway... it's not the quantity of meetings, but the quality of meetings. Like in life, it's not how MANY, but how MUCH, is what truly matters.
