It's cold outside, yet still so many young people have nowhere to sleep night after night ?? re:sustain is gearing up, alongside the wider industry, for this year's?LandAid SleepOut ????, an incredible annual initiative dedicated to raising vital funds to support young people throughout the UK without a place to call home ?? David Harvey-Evers,?Katie Whipp, Finlay Milliner?and I will be getting a taste for the night's elements across two cities:?#Bristol?and?#London. Join us as we take a stand against youth homelessness - it really is amazing what the industry can achieve when it works together ?? This issue is especially close to my heart as 5% of homeless people are veterans - a number which rose 14% in 2022 - no one who has served their country should be in this position, without the support of their family, military and social network. Op Fortitude aimed to remove veterans sleeping on the streets by the end of 2023 and the Government has committed to ending rough sleeping by the end of 2024. But this is a community effort and we must all help where we can. ?? Matter is Riding to End Youth Homelessness On November 15th, we’re joining the Healesville Tour de PIF: Tour for Homeless Youth - a cycling challenge dedicated to raising funds to provide young Australians facing homelessness with a safe, secure home. Every night, 46,000 young people experience homelessness and half of them are turned away from accommodation services. Did you know that over 38,000 young people aged 15–24 years presented alone to a homelessness service in 2022–23? Of these young people, almost half experienced mental ill-health, and over one-third experienced domestic and family violence. Most of these young people needed short- or long-term accommodation, and most were turned away due to a lack of capacity. These statistics only scratch the surface of issues that young people experiencing homelessness face. To have statistics like this in a country like Australia is not acceptable; together, we can have a tangible impact, and now is the time to act. #wehavetodobetter #YHMD

Expanding Housing First initiatives can significantly support charities like Newbury Soup Kitchen in housing our clients. Housing First offers a pathway to more sustainable outcomes for our clients. Rather than solely providing temporary relief, Newbury Soup Kitchen can collaborate with Housing First programs to facilitate the transition of our clients into permanent housing. This allows us to focus its resources on other essential services, such as providing meals and outreach. Sadly, this service is required now more than ever with the increasing rise in homelessness across England. Through collaboration and a shared commitment to housing as a fundamental human right, Housing First can support our clients find a long-term solution to homelessness. #notjustsoup

National Homelessness Week 2024: Taking Action Now This week is National Homelessness Week, a time to bring our attention to the wide range of people that are impacted by Homelessness here in Australia. There is an estimated 122,000 individuals who find themselves without a place to call home on any given night. Homelessness is not just the rough sleepers you see out on the streets in the city or in their car, it includes people who are forced to move from one temporary shelter to another, such as emergency accomodation and refuges or people coach surfing. And then there are also the people who live in accomodation that falls below the minimum standards, this can include boarding houses, caravan parks and overcrowded homes. The theme for this year’s Homelessness Week is “Homelessness Action Now,” emphasising the urgent need for solutions to end homelessness. Let’s use this week not just to talk about homelessness but to take concrete steps towards ending it. Personal post alert... and it is a bit hard hitting ? Did you know that the average age of death for people experiencing homelessness is 46 for men and 42 for women... ? Homeless people are over nine times more likely to take their own life than the general population. ? People sleeping on the street are almost 17 times more likely to have been victims of violence. More than one in three people sleeping rough have been deliberately hit or kicked or experienced some other form of violence whilst homeless. People have even been set on FIRE. ? The statistics show that one third of care leavers become homeless in the first two years immediately after they leave care and 25% of homeless people have been in care at some point in their lives. I am not only a care leaver, but have personally been homeless and at risk of homelessness many times in my younger years – so raising money for this great cause is also somewhat personal. All donations are so very much appreciated, and I am looking forward to seeing just how much I (we) can raise this year! ??
