IdentiFlight, a leader in avian anti-collision systems for wind farms, has unveiled its latest innovation, the V5 technology. A pioneering Tasmanian wind farm, Cattle Hill, has reported no eagle fatalities for over a year, thanks to the upgraded IdentiFlight technology. This aerial monitoring system detects and prevents bird collisions with turbine blades by shutting down turbines if an eagle is on a collision course. Identiflight uses tower-mounted cameras and algorithms to track eagle flight paths. If a collision risk is detected, the system sends a signal to stop the turbine. In May 2023, a taller 30-metre tower was added to address blind spots over forested areas, enhancing the system’s accuracy. As a result, Wedge-tailed Eagles and White-bellied Sea Eagles have been protected, with no incidents reported. Despite eagle activity increasing on-site, their populations remain stable—showing that renewable energy development can work hand-in-hand with wildlife conservation. The project originally allowed up to five eagle fatalities in its first year, but Goldwind aimed for zero harm from the start. According to project director Leigh Walters, "We’ve introduced something that is making a positive difference, and not just relying on the eagles avoiding the turbines." SSE Renewables has confirmed construction of the 208 MW Strathy South wind farm in the Scottish Highlands, set to begin in spring 2025. Located in Sutherland, the project includes 35 Vestas turbines and will deliver clean energy by late 2027. Strathy South supports the UK and Scottish Governments' decarbonization goals and includes a ￡1 million annual community fund. U.S. Department of Energy Announces $11 Million Funding Opportunity for Solar and Wildlife Research. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) has unveiled the Solar with Wildlife and Ecosystem Benefits 2 (SolWEB2) funding opportunity, dedicating up to $11 million to enhance the coexistence of large-scale solar (LSS) facilities with wildlife and ecosystems. This initiative also seeks to advance agrivoltaics, the dual use of land for agricultural and solar energy production. With more than 5,000 LSS facilities constructed across the United States in the past decade—and continued growth expected—the interaction between these facilities and their surrounding environments is increasingly significant. SolWEB2 aims to address the land-use conflicts that arise during the siting and permitting of these facilities, helping stakeholders implement strategies that benefit wildlife, ecosystems, and the communities hosting solar projects. https://lnkd.in/e2sbRg2A

Rock Valley Solar Project Sparks Controversy in Nevada The proposed Rock Valley Solar Project, spanning 10,000 acres in Amargosa Valley, is under review by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). If approved, it could power 360,000 homes in Nevada and California. However, its proximity to the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, home to unique species like the endangered Devil’s Hole pupfish, has drawn opposition from conservation groups, locals, and the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe. Concerns include groundwater impacts, soil disturbance linked to Valley fever, and cultural preservation. Despite sitting outside a designated "solar energy zone," the project received "high priority" status, contrasting with six other local proposals labeled "low priority" due to environmental risks. Critics urge prioritizing solar projects within designated zones to balance clean energy expansion with ecological protection.
