A sense of hope doesn’t just arise in peace. It’s forged in unity. When I lived and worked in rural communities, in particular on a farm in Japan, I witnessed this firsthand. Challenges—like extreme weather threatening crops—were inevitable. But what gave us strength wasn’t the absence of challenges; it was the bond we shared as a community. No matter what happened, we knew we’d come together to support each other. In today’s increasingly divided world, it’s easy to feel disconnected and retreat inward, focusing only on our personal safety and well-being. But when we isolate ourselves, the gaps in our world—between those with access to opportunities and resources and those without—only grow wider. This isolation doesn’t just create scarcity for others; it fosters insecurity for us all. What the world truly needs now is connection. When we step out, extend a hand, and support one another, we create an environment where everyone has the opportunity to rise. This is how hope is born—not just for a few, but for all of us. As we approach this season of giving and appreciation, we can embrace the power of small, collective actions to create real change. Together, we can inspire hope for our planet, our children, our communities, and our shared future. That’s why we’ve introduced the ‘Season of Hope’ Bundled Gifts—a meaningful way for our Members to create hope where it’s needed most. With four specially designed bundles, you can make a difference by purchasing these themed bundles: ??? Hope for Our Planet ?? Hope for the Children ?? Hope for Humanity ?? It's no small feat to travel 160,000,000km, to visit 200 million children, in 800 million homes, in only 34 hours... Luckily Santa has magic on his side. According to Arnold Pompos of Purdue University, Santa would have to travel a total of 160,000,000km – further than the distance from the Earth to the Sun – to visit 200 million children in 800 million homes spread over 3x1013 m2 of land around the world. He would have about 10 hours, from 8pm to 6am, to deliver the presents. Luckily, children happen to be spread across a wide range of time zones, buying Santa an additional 24 hours. Even so, covering this distance in 34 hours is certainly no mean feat. Crunching the figures, we get a speed of 4,705,882km/h, far slower than the speed of light, but still fast enough that the air resistance is likely to vaporize Santa, along with all the children’s gifts… if he wasn’t riding a magic sleigh. More of why we do what we do at UpSpring… It’s a common misconception that the the vast majority of people who are homeless are single adults with mental health and/or substance abuse issues. In reality, almost a third are families with children and 2/3 don’t have mental health or substance abuse issues. Imagine being a homeless single mom or dad with 3 children who just can’t find housing for 4 people on a single income of $15/hr. $15/hr is approximately $30,000 annually. Family of 4 trying to live off $30K annually. If you’ve had that income as a single adult like I have, you know what a stretch that is for 1 person let alone 4. This is the reality for many families in Greater Cincinnati. They make too much to qualify for subsidized housing and food stamps, but not enough to live in a 3 Bedroom apartment at $1800-2000/mo. And even if they made less and did qualify for subsidized housing, there is none available. Hundreds of people with section 8 certificates are waiting for something to become available. Where are they staying until then? A shelter? Maybe, if there’s space. A hotel? If they can afford to pay $70/night. After taxes, that’s the almost the whole paycheck for a day’s work going to the hotel room. Nothing to speak of left for food, gas if they have a car or bus passes to get to work if they don’t, clothes, shoes, school supplies, hygiene items, etc. More than likely, they’re staying with someone they know in a spare room, all 4 of them together in that room, storing their clothes in trash bags, and half of them sleeping on the floor. Or they’re living in their car because that beats the streets, and they’re waiting for a spot at the local shelter and trying to save money for an income-aligned apartment IF one becomes available in their price range. The problem of homelessness is going to take the entire community to solve. Until we can align on this effort and give it the resources it needs to be tackled and firmly reduced, you will find UpSpring doing our best to keep kids connected to their education and supplied with all the resources they need to succeed. Join us in our mission to elevate kids through education and lift them out of the cycle of poverty and homelessness. Find out more at: www.upspring.org ??
At UpSpring, we’re dedicated to helping children and families overcome barriers and create a pathway to success. By empowering them with the resources, support, and opportunities they need, we are working to create lasting change and ensure brighter futures for all. ??

I just finished the pre-read on this. It's a well-done story with the core message around the importance of community and recognizing that everyone has value and something to offer. This may be a children's book, but that core message - that everyone has value and something to contribute - is such an important leadership attribute. I work in technology and unfortunately every place I have worked I have witnessed "leaders" writing off others because of the perception that their demographic didn't fit the mold of what a good engineer should be. Generally this had to do with age, but that certainly wasn't the only demographic. Don't let that happen. Get to know people. Understand their strengths and help them showcase what they bring to the game. Be their champion. You will not only be helping them, but you be changing minds and helping others around them understand that everyone has value and something to contribute. That message can be planted early with this book as it's seed.
