???Tell me about a time when you made an unpopular decision. During my time at an early college model high school, where every student worked toward their associate degree and high school diploma simultaneously, I faced a challenging yet enlightening situation. Between junior and senior year, we had a mandatory two-week stay on Vincennes campus to take classes and engage in various activities. For my sociology class, the final project required us to break a social norm. My team decided to conduct our project on Parents' Day, believing it was the perfect opportunity to observe reactions. On that day, I brought my iPod speaker to the cafeteria, turned it on full blast, and my teammate Yailyn started stripping (multiple layers of clothing) right in front of every parent and administrator present. As expected, the parents were outraged, and Yailyn faced potential suspension or expulsion. Despite the backlash, we explained that our actions were part of a sociology experiment. This experience taught us valuable lessons about social norms and human behavior, and we ultimately received an A on the project. Lessons Learned: ?? The importance of clear communication and context when presenting unconventional ideas. ?? Understanding and analyzing social norms can provide deep insights into human behavior. ??? Social Engineers ??♂??? A while back, I was asked to give a briefing about sociology and why fresh students should consider joining the sociology department. It was during the final weeks of the semester, (well I guess my whole appearance—my hair, beard, and everything—said it all; I didn’t even have to explain that part??) anyways, I tried to list every possible reason why someone should choose sociology. I even threw in the scholarship as a bit of a “bribe” to make it more appealing. ?? (And just to clarify, the scholarship bit was real—I didn’t make that up!) But looking back, I realized I could have kept it simpler. Something like: "We’re the social engineers who can make a real difference in our country—if not the world—by changing mindsets and transforming society." ?? That probably would’ve been enough. After all, sociology doesn’t really need convincing reasons for someone to join. It’s a field where you learn how to analyze society and find solutions to some of the biggest challenges we face today. ?? #socialengineers #sociologists #socialchange

The formal title for the course is "special topics in culture, language, and social interaction," but it's all about youth activism (the formal title is a weird thing that happens in our department every once in a while when we want to offer cool, new courses). Here are some of the key questions the course explores: Why do young people organize and participate in movements and activism? Are their movements inherently different from those led by other groups? Is youth simply a matter of age and availability, or does it encompass distinct values, ideas, and identities? Check out reasons 1-4 in my previous posts): Sociology has a rich tradition of analyzing student protests, and one key finding from this research is that they’re more likely to happen at elite institutions. Take the recent wave of student protests calling for divestment from Israel—where did it start? Columbia University, about as elite as elite gets. In fact, a recent article from The Washington Monthly confirmed this finding: the more students on Pell Grants (often used as a measure of socioeconomic status) at a university, the less likely that school was to see protests or encampments. Why do you think that is? Why is it that the more working-class students a college has, the less likely protests are? And why are more privileged students at far wealthier institutions often leading the charge? ?? Week 5 in the Classroom: A Journey of Moments ?? Teaching Sociology, Civics, and Economics to G9-G12 hight school students in CSM has been an incredible journey. Five weeks in, and every day feels like a new adventure filled with learning, laughter, and growth! ??? Today, my senior students asked me for advice and took a sweet photo they captured during one of our heartfelt discussions. In the picture, I’m caught mid-sentence, passionately reminding them to "Enjoy every moment." It’s a phrase I hold dear, and seeing the smiles on their faces made me realize how much these moments matter—not just to them, but to me as well. ???? Teaching is more than just textbooks and lectures. It’s about connecting, inspiring, and learning from one another. From guiding debates on society’s biggest challenges to breaking down economic concepts, every day brings something new and exciting. Watching my students engage, question, and evolve is the most rewarding part of this journey. Grateful for these moments and excited for what’s to come!
