When it Comes to the US Elections and AI-augmented Disinformation, Don't Believe Everything You See, Hear or Read Can genAI be the difference maker in close elections? According to recently published research (see: https://lnkd.in/enPy2MPA), genAI could be the factor that tips the scales in otherwise close races. Local and state election officials are currently combating genAI-powered misinformation threats from various AI tools like DALL-E and ChatGPT, while foreign-state sponsored operatives create false narratives about political candidates hoping to fool any "tools" in the voting public that is easily influenced in their echo chambers by this activity. Amidst the rising challenges posed by genAI-disinformation, it's crucial to be vigilant as a voter. State and local election websites offer reliable information, and numerous fact-checking organizations provide tools to verify election-related content. And if you think this is bad in 2024, it will only get worse in the future -- especially if it is the difference maker these disinfo networks hope it will be. “A fake video is circulating from Politics Live today. It contains words I did not use.” So it begins - the first major ‘deepfake’ of the 2024 general election campaign. We have been hearing about deepfakes for years now. But today they are at a level where they are credible enough to not only go viral, but be believed. As deepfakes begin to significantly impact a major political event and target politicians who are best placed to do something about them, will it lead to a tougher regulatory approach on generative AI once the polls close?
