"We take pedestrian and bicyclist safety very seriously in our town and we are proud to have a very active Safe Walking and Cycling Committee that works with us on addressing the challenges we face in this area,” Mayor Elsie Foster said. “This federal allocation will go a very long way in making some of our busiest streets safer and more accessible for a variety of uses.”

Leavenworth, KS, is on the brink of a transformation. With the revitalization of downtown 4th Street and the proposal for a new bridge connecting Kansas and Missouri, we can improve the infrastructure that affects us all. However, one critical aspect that can’t be overlooked is bicycle safety. The current bridge? It’s a hazard. It’s a challenge for motorists, but for cyclists, it’s downright dangerous. As someone who loves cycling along the Missouri side—riding the Weston Bluffs and heading into the Kansas City area—I know firsthand how crucial it is to have safe, dedicated cycling paths. This issue is personal to me not just because of my own experiences but because of the tragic accidents we've seen in this community, including the heartbreaking loss of a child in a cycling accident. The new bridge proposal offers us an opportunity to fix this. It’s not just about accommodating more cars but ensuring safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians. We need dedicated bike lanes, clear signage, and safer routes. If we don’t prioritize these features, we risk more lives. As we continue to grow, with downtown Leavenworth’s revitalization in full swing, it’s important to remember that bicycle infrastructure is more than bike lanes. It’s about fostering a healthier, safer community. Studies show that cities investing in cycling infrastructure reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities and encourage more people to adopt cycling as a form of exercise and transportation. Imagine a Leavenworth where families can ride bikes downtown without fear, where children are safe biking to school, and where our streets accommodate everyone—whether on foot, behind the wheel, or riding a bike. That’s the future I want for this community. I can’t stress enough how much I would prefer not having to step in due to tragic cycling accidents—something no one should have to endure. With the right planning and infrastructure, we can prevent these avoidable losses and make our community safer. Let’s ensure that as we build our future, we include the safety of cyclists and pedestrians in every conversation. Together, we can ensure Leavenworth grows into a vibrant, safe, and healthy community for everyone. #LeavenworthKS #BicycleSafety #SafeStreets #KansasCityMetro #CyclingInfrastructure #CommunityHealth #BridgeSafety #WestonBluffs #HealthyCommunities #CyclingSafety #AOLife

74% of Bentonville residents want a connected bike network to travel around the city & safely commute to/from work. As mayor, I will ensure Bentonville becomes more connected and safer for both cyclists and drivers. My plan includes: 1. Expediting trail expansions to connect neighborhoods to downtown 2. Ensuring e-bike commuters can get to work without navigating dangerous road crossings 3. Funding trail maintenance to drive continued growth of the cycling tourism economy 4. Expand bike lanes more rapidly by converting sidewalks to bike lanes to provide a safer, more connected network for families and bike commuters to make streets less congested. We need to find funding through private/public partnerships to expand our cycling infrastructure and make roads safer for everyone. Being an avid cyclist myself and a supporter of the cycling community here in Bentonville, I know how important it is to plan for and invest in a more accessible and safe environment for all. . . . #SteveGalenforMayor #BentonvilleGrowth #VoteGalen #SteveGalenforMayor #BentonvilleGrowth #VoteGalen #BusinessMinded #BusinessLeader #BentonvilleAR #NWA

Cycling in cities can be scary. I've been hit by a car twice. Enormous SUVs [1] weave through traffic, avoiding stopping buses, busy trucks and speeding cars, creating a terrifying journey for anybody not in their own protected metal box. Fortunately, many cities are building lots of new grade-separated cycleways, providing safe passage from the chaotic and dangerous roadways. Bike ridership in cities continues to be dominated by men, with most other participants citing safety and comfort on roads as major hurdles. In bike-friendly cities and countries, ridership among women is factors higher.[2] "A host of factors can discourage women from venturing into the streets on bikes. Female cyclists are twice as likely as men to be targeted with?hostility from drivers, a 2015 study found; verbal and?sexual harassment?are also frequently part of the commuting routine. Women are also?underrepresented in the transportation space?in general, from the policy world to the engineering, regulating and administration of city roadways. For many decades, the streets of cities around the world have largely been built around the mobility preferences of men." But what about the 'The Other Kind of Bike Infrastructure Cities Need'. "To help close this gap and transform the culture of biking, education can play a big role, advocates say, by teaching people to be confident on a bike regardless of their background." While there's plenty more to be done, initiatives such as bike safety lessons and courses can go a long way to making all bicycle users safe, aware and confident to use their bikes. In Sydney, local councils offer cheap / free classes and courses on learning how to bike ride and bike safety. For example: ?? The City of Sydney offers a 'Cycling in the City' course, guiding you through safety techniques and some of the City's picturesque routes. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/d-HBegQ2 ?? The City of Parramatta provides lessons for those who have never ridden or haven't in a while, and would like some support getting on a bike. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/d-23MfP7 There are also good cycling map resources out there to help you plan out safe and simple cycling routes across the city. ?? Attention all trail enthusiasts! Are you someone who loves hitting the trails on a recumbent tricycle or cycling with your little ones in tow? Do you find yourself facing barriers due to narrow gate openings that hinder your ability to fully enjoy the beautiful Caledon Trail? We hear you, and we’re advocating for change! It’s time to address the issue of inclusivity on the Caledon Trail. The current gate openings pose a significant challenge for individuals using recumbent tricycles and parents cycling with toddler carriers. These narrow openings not only dampen enjoyment but also risk safety. Additionally, the way these gates are closed and locked can completely block access for those who need wider openings. Imagine facing a locked gate with the handle positioned inward, effectively shutting out entire groups of trail users! We believe that inclusivity equals enjoyment of the trail for everyone. By widening gate openings and ensuring accessible locking mechanisms, we can create a welcoming environment that allows everyone to participate fully. Let’s make our voices heard! Join us in advocating for trail accessibility. Share your experiences, spread the word, and urge authorities to take action. Together, we can ensure that the Caledon Trail is truly inclusive and enjoyable for all. #TrailInclusivity #CaledonTrailAccessibility #EnjoymentForAll

Trouble biking across the Baltimore area? Planners want to hear from you via Baltimore Banner. Most people find riding a bike on busy, multilane streets or roads without shoulders intimidating, but for many rides across the Baltimore region at some point, there’s no other option. Regional planners are identifying gaps where better infrastructure could make the Baltimore region more bikeable — and they want public feedback. https://ow.ly/bVlc50Uj9CG #UrbanPlanning #BikeInfrastructure

Transport for London (TfL) has unveiled a new enforcement plan to clamp down on irresponsibly parked dockless e-bikes in the capital. TfL will collaborate with operators to reduce the safety threat posed by problematically parked dockless e-bikes. The transport authority said it may also take action against operators who allow their bikes to be parked outside of designated areas. “Large numbers of e-bikes abandoned or parked on busy pavements and roads pose a significant safety concern for older people, people with disabilities, or people with pushchairs. We estimate that the fleet size in London has doubled in the last 12 months, and we have to take some action here,”?London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner Will Norman told Zag Daily in an interview. #cradletograveurbanism Walkable communities create ‘cradle to grave’ environments. These environments allow for access to amenities for all. “Seniors have the most to gain from pedestrian and cycling improvements—yet they often feel threatened by changes that provide alternatives to driving. “ A Cnu.org article provides ways to include seniors in active transportation planning. #aginginplace #activeliving #seniorliving #equity

What does a thriving transportation system look like? It’s one where pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers navigate safely and seamlessly. Our team’s #collaboration with Contra Costa County on the recently completed Danville Boulevard Complete Streets project in Alamo, California, exemplifies this vision. This once busy, stop-controlled intersection at a local shopping center has been transformed into a dynamic roundabout that prioritizes accessibility and safety by: ?? Engaging with the local cycling community throughout the project to help shape the design, which resulted in a new roundabout that features an adjacent bike-friendly sidewalk for cyclists of all experience levels and improves circulation for shoppers and residents. ??♀?Enhancing pedestrian safety with upgraded crosswalks, sidewalk extensions, and a thoughtfully designed pathway network, which provides seamless access to the shopping center. ?? Incorporating green infrastructure, including bioretention basins and pervious pavers in the truck apron, which maintains mature trees, enhances aesthetics, and protects the environment. ?? Minimizing impacts to businesses by staging construction to maintain access to local shops, especially during the busy holiday season. See the new roundabout in action! Watch as cyclists and drivers navigate this community-centered design that’s making Alamo safer and more accessible for everyone. ???? #completestreets #pedestriansafety #multimodal #ConsorProjects

??♀????? Exciting news from Queensland! ??♀????? Toowoomba Regional Council has just opened Queensland’s first Safe Active Street on Pierce Street in Toowoomba. This is a first for the whole eastern seaboard of Australia after extensive testing of the Safe Active Streets concept in Western Australia. As explained in our recent article, Making Local Streets Safe for Bikes, a Safe Active Street prioritises cycling with a speed limit of 30km/h. Cars need to yield to cyclists. Painted markings and traffic calming interventions make all road users aware of the changed conditions. https://lnkd.in/g4anuk2N Pierce Street is part of the Principal Cycle Network. The small suburban street links two of Toowoomba's major bike paths. Amending the street into a Safe Active Street was a more cost-effective solution than creating a separated bikeway to create the connection. This great report from the ABC explains the history and benefits of the project: https://lnkd.in/grqs2wfE ‘We have a very car dominated road network in Queensland and in Australia,’ says Brian McKay, Senior Transport Planner at Toowoomba Regional Council. ‘So all the time we can get these incremental changes to show people that there is a different kind of behaviour that is appropriate and safe for all users, then it is a great outcome for all.’ Images (top): Toowoomba's Pierce Street is Queensland's first Safe Active Street (Image: Peter Gunders) Bottom (L-R): New signage to explain how it all works!
