As a straight white male, I've noticed an unfortunate trend among some of my peers - admittedly, it's nothing new. My 'demographic' has always been fundamentally resistant to change, fearful of inclusion and skeptical towards the concept of equity. But the trend I've noticed over these past few years seems to always spike around June, where there are so many key dates and observances : There is apprehension, a fatigue really, toward significant observances like Pride, National Indigenous History Month, and Asian Heritage Month among certain straight white males. This isn't something you'd necessarily overhear in the workplace - and certainly something you wouldn't be privy to unless you were part of this same demo. But off hours, in the supposed "safety" of their peers - I've seen it. I've heard it. And yes, I have called it out - what utter complacent privilege to be in a position where diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives are a burden on your workday. It’s disheartening to see hesitation in embracing these important celebrations that promote inclusion and understanding. Perhaps it's not hesitation, maybe more accurately waning enthusiasm, I suppose. For some, at least. However, I’m incredibly grateful that my children are being exposed to these diverse cultures and complex histories through their schools, family activities, and community events. They are growing up in an environment that values and celebrates diversity, teaching them the importance of inclusion and the consequences of history from an early age. Inclusion matters. It's a cliché, but anyone with young children growing up in this reality can palpably see it on a daily basis and I am thankful (and somewhat envious, frankly.) of that. By embracing these observances, we enrich our workplaces and communities, fostering a culture of respect and understanding. Let’s challenge ourselves to move beyond our comfort zones and support these celebrations with the enthusiasm they deserve. So, next time you feel like rolling your eyes at the Land Acknowledgment kicking off your teams meeting - maybe take a minute to run a quick search on the history of the Nations being mentioned, or any of the Treaties discussed and get your head right. This #NationalInclusionWeek, we should focus on learning from the experiences of others to build stronger, more inclusive workplaces. One of the most powerful ways to promote inclusion is by amplifying the lived experiences of underrepresented groups. Our previous "Shared Lived Experiences" campaign highlighted the importance of listening to diverse voices and creating a platform where their stories were shared authentically. Lived experiences provide authentic and personal insights into understanding societal issues, fostering empathy, and driving change. When shared, these experiences have the potential to challenge stereotypes, promote empathy and inspire change. It’s National Inclusion Week. And my feed is full of companies celebrating progress across DE&I — bringing team members together to embrace differences, learn from each other and record videos that'll boost their employer brand. But with this year’s theme, #ImpactMatters, I’ve been reflecting on the bigger picture. While progress inside corporate walls is essential, the biggest inequalities still exist outside them. So if we want to see lasting inclusion, don't we need to extend our efforts? At Niya, we’re focused on something deeper: helping the most economically excluded people to access opportunity. Companies often underestimate how much influence they have here — in shaping narratives, defining norms and determining who really gets a shot at financial freedom. Next week marks #neurodiversitycelebrationweek in the UK! I'm a Mum of an autistic daughter, and see first hand the challenges neurodiverse people have to overcome. She struggles daily, trying to understand this alien world around her. But she is smart, courageous & never gives up! This global initiative aims to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about neurological differences. By recognizing the many talents and advantages of being neurodivergent, schools, universities, and organizations can create more inclusive and empowering cultures for every individual. This morning, I dropped Olive and Ivy off at school, watching them excitedly run to their friends, full of joy for the day ahead. It got me thinking - how easily they can join in, be part of something, and feel included. But this shouldn’t be a rare privilege; it should be the standard. It’s #NationalInclusionWeek, and yet I find myself still in disbelief that inclusion remains something we have to fight for. It’s 2024, and we’re still in a world where inclusivity is often seen as an option rather than the norm. This morning’s school run was a stark reminder that while some embrace inclusion naturally, society as a whole often still resists. It’s still not a typical decision, and it’s still not fair. At The Wilf Ward Family Trust, we’re actively working to change that narrative. Our projects focus on giving people with learning disabilities a voice and making sure they know their rights - whether it's through tackling health inequalities or helping people develop the skills they need to find meaningful employment. We need to stop treating inclusivity as an afterthought and make it the default. I’m proud of the work we do, but there’s still so much more to be done. Gearing up for a new week and the start of an important week in the year- #nationalinclusionweek. Not too far into the school year, this years theme feels as relevant to school as it is in the workplace. Debriefing on the school day- it's always has it been a good or a bad one and inevitably this is down to the words and/ or actions of others- friends, teachers, parents. At Laing O'Rourke we've just launched our new #diversity and #inclusion plan and one huge chunk of it is about "Driving Cultural Accountability"- what this means is each and every one of us has a choice, daily on how we impact others through our actions and behaviours.
