I was blown away by the ANC of Airpods Pro! This is how most earphones cancel noise: The sound input from an external facing microphone is fed into a DSP which generates an equal and opposite sound wave and superimposes it on the actual audio being played in the earphone (almost in real time). Sound waves (like any other waves) add based on destructive interference and (almost) cancel out each other. That is ANC (Active Noise Cancellation). The most crucial parameter here is the processing time, remember, if the anti-noise signal does not exactly align with noise signal, it will create more noise. Sounds fair and simple, right? Not very much. The sampling frequency of the microphone will decide what the MCU perceives as external noise (remember Nyquist's Theorem? ??) and will be the only part for which it will create anti-noise signal. So you’ll still hear high frequency rumbles. I was curious how can you solve this with a custom made audio processing chip and a lot of money? You put a microphone in the earphone towards the ear. So the feedback loop tells you the noise leaked into the ear and you can eliminate that as well (Found this from a teardown, check the link in comments). This happens 200 times a second in the Apple H1 chip with 10 audio processing cores. 6 sensors, 3 microphones, and a wireless chip with a 0.16 Wh battery in this form factor is remarkable engineering!
