Do buy side firms hire from the sell side? I am a Market Risk Manager - how can I move to an asset manager or hedge fund? This is a question I get asked a lot and have supported a number of these moves. In short, Yes! but lets start with WHY? ?? Better compensation ?? More flexible working arrangements ?? Often a better work life balance - not always though! ?? More dynamic ?? Less bureaucratic ?? Less regulatory reporting ?? Exposure to external clients ?? Ex-ante analytics as opposed to just ex-post A couple of considerations: ?? Hedge Funds tend to prefer Market Risk Managers from a bank due to a more technical and mathematical skill set often combined with stronger coding. ?? Hedge Funds tend to hold their staff to non-compete which means hiring like for like is more challenging. ?? Asset Managers usually prefer candidates from other asset managers - citing candidates from banks can find it challenging to get their head around the different approach - but not always! ?? Two hedge fund Operations managers have said to me this week that hiring those with buyside experience is becoming increasingly more difficult. Shortage of options, long notice periods and a ‘buy side premium’ is making it expensive and time consuming to bring someone in. Which has forced their hand to look to the sell side for candidates, and they found good people -quickly. One team hired someone from a tier 1 bank. The other from a ‘mid-size’ Capital Markets bank. Both had the required product knowledge and skillset and settled in to their roles pretty seamlessly. Is it time for funds to start looking at more candidate with a sell side background??
