Meet Dr. Ken Mackie, a Distinguished Professor, and Dr. Feng Guo, an Associate Professor at Indiana University Bloomington. Dr. Mackie and Dr. Guo are working on a device designed to prevent overdose deaths in high-risk individuals taking prescribed high-dose opioids, especially those who may overdose in unmonitored settings, like while asleep. This device includes sensors to monitor breathing and heart rate, a microneedle patch to deliver naloxone when needed, and an app that tracks vital signs and detects potential overdose risks. If an overdose is detected, the patch automatically administers naloxone and alerts first responders. By focusing on those under medical supervision, they aim to reduce overdose deaths without encouraging recreational opioid use. We have an obesity epidemic in the US and while I don't think GLP-1s are the only way we should attack it, if we have effective treatments we need to use them. We're in the midst of yet another anti-obesity medication shortage, the likes of which have been happening essentially ever since Wegovy came on the market in 2021. It inevitably brings up important questions about how to prevent this from happening and conversations about who should (or should not) be taking these medications. When looking at things from a large, population scale it may seem straightforward to set these types of limits.
