If you have experience bonefishing in South Florida, please take the Bonefish Fishery Assessment Survey before February 1 by visiting BTT.org/Bonefish-Survey! 75% of the world’s fisheries don’t have a stock assessment. This is true for valuable sportfish like bonefish, tarpon, and permit. In order for conservation measures to be effective, we need high-quality information on how our fisheries are doing. Numerous factors, including habitat loss and degradation and water quality declines, have hurt our bonefish population in the Florida Keys. Quantifying changes in the fishery and fish population is powerful information that we can use to push for the improvements needed to restore the fishery. Visit BTT.org/Bonefish-Survey to learn more.

At Gomez and Sullivan, we recognize the critical role that fisheries and fish migration play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to safeguard these vital resources. Recently, our experts honed their skills by performing surgeries to implant tracking devices in fish. This initiative is part of an upcoming study aimed at gaining deeper insights into fish movements and behaviors. By understanding their patterns, we can develop effective strategies to protect local river fisheries. Together, we’re committed to harmonizing the needs of both people and the environment. #FisheriesConservation #FishMigration #EnvironmentalStewardship

?? ?? Following beach seine sampling conducted on behalf of?Mowi Canada West in the Broughton Archipelago, BC, in 2024, the BC Salmon Farmers Association has argued that #salmonfarms do not drive #sealice levels on wild?#salmon. ? The data obtained from the wild juvenile #salmonid monitoring #program shows that the variability in the percentage of sea lice on wild Pacific salmon remains unchanged despite the removal of salmon farms in the area. ???? Emeritus Scientist of Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada Simon Jones: "This is an important finding, as it aligns with the #research and data on sea lice in #Canada. The highly variable relationship between lice levels on wild salmon and salmon #aquaculture in BC indicates the need for a greater understanding of all factors affecting the #survival of wild salmon." https://lnkd.in/d-3qdE82

This week, NOAA Fisheries announced the withdrawal of a proposed revised vessel speed rule that would have limited speeds for more vessels and in new places across the habitat of the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale. Four whales, including two calves, died as the result of vessel strikes in 2024 alone. "In attempting to make everyone happy, the agency turned years of delay into an outright denial of the needs of a critically endangered species,” – Jane Davenport, our senior attorney. Cool Ascension Island story, between Angola and Brazil, on how combo of tagging rare sea birds + tracking fishing trawlers on digital marine maps, can help manage tuna/ fish stocks + legal & illegal action in Marine Protected Areas.
Ascension Island is home to 11 species of seabirds, including the distinctive Masked Booby. These large pelagic birds prefer to forage over deep water, closing in on small bait fish that are driven to the surface by predators such as dolphins and yellowfin tuna. Sadly, heavy fishing of commercial catch disrupts the feeding and nutrition cycle of the vulnerable Masked Booby and other seabirds. Discover how authorities at Ascension Island Government Conservation and Fisheries Directorate (AIGCFD) are using Marine Manager to access oceanographic data that protects these spectacular plunge divers and other unique habitats. bit.ly/3RgdIzh

NCCOS scientists and partners have modeled where stormwater might carry ash from the 2023 wildfires in Lahaina, Hawaii to determine which fisheries and coral reefs around Maui might be at risk of contamination. Model results can help guide local fish and shellfish monitoring efforts and inform related seafood consumption warnings. https://lnkd.in/eG_yKB_9
