Should you sell on Walmart Marketplace? No. Yes. Maybe. I get this question almost every day. “Eric, this Amazon launch has gone great.” Should we launch on Walmart and TikTok Shop? And Macy’s.com and Kroger and Greatstuff.net? Although I’m VERY bullish on Walmart marketplace… And we launch plans on both for living… My answer is often “no”. I’ve made cases for both marketplaces. At some point, the answer is going to be yes. But you have to know what you’re getting into. -> Walmart Marketplace is much smaller than Amazon. -> The Walmart customer is a value shopper. -> Ad conversion *can* be lower than Amazon. Here are some good reasons to turn to Walmart: -> You can handle another layer of complexity. ? -> Your Amazon foundation is built and solid. ? -> You’re planning to pitch to Walmart Retail. ? (?? You want to prove product fit.??) -> You’ve launched into Walmart Retail. ? -> Theres a case of resellers gone wild. ? (Thank you Derek Gould for the last one.) According to a recent forecast by EMARKETER, Amazon will account for 40.4% of US retail e-commerce sales this year, totaling a massive $491.65 billion. This growth trajectory continues a steady trend: - 2020: 37.9% market share - 2023: 39.6% market share - 2024 (projected): 40.4% market share ?? Importantly, Amazon also benefits from diversified revenue streams like AWS and Prime, offering additional buffers for overall growth. While Amazon's growth is consistent, Walmart poses a noteworthy challenge. Walmart's e-commerce sales growth rate (13.6%) currently outpaces Amazon's (10.5%), especially in the grocery sector. ?? What have you bought in the past week? Month? Year? More importantly, ?????????? did buy those things? If you are a brand or if you work in the ecommerce space, it's easy to get Amazon tunnel vision. But with Amazon becoming more competitive and nuanced, I think many of us are taking a step back, rubbing our eyes, and looking at the facts again. We are living through the manifestation of an omnichannel experience. At this point, everyone knows if you are not selling across channels, you are missing out on sizable audiences that are ready to shop. In 2023, 72% of 18–29-year-olds bought something from Amazon. 62% bought something from Walmart. And 32% bought something from Target, according to Statistica. Where I see brands getting stuck is actually putting that knowledge into practice. If you do not have channel-specific insight and expertise, it can be hard to navigate each channel's specific requirements, fulfillment challenges, and best practices. No surprise Amazon continues to dominate digital retail in terms of visitors and sales. But they're also setting a blazing pace for Retail Media Networks with an astounding 77% of US retail media ad revenue (vs. 40.9% of sales market share).?We work with some of the largest buyers of retail media and firmly believe one reason is that advertisers see them as much more than a retail giant, or even an RMN.
