?? Consistent with a commitment to grow Maine’s engineering and computing workforce and overall economy, University of Maine System (UMS) Trustees just approved two new degree programs. This January, the University of Maine at Augusta will launch an entirely online Associate of Science in Cybersecurity and the University of Maine will begin offering an innovative Bachelor’s of Science in Computer Science and Business. “I commend our public universities for being innovative and collaborative in creating new academic programs that prepare students with the critical thinking and technical skills needed for success in an increasingly digital economy,” said Board Chair Trish Riley. “These two new degree offerings are yet another example of our System leveraging its unique unified accreditation to meet Maine’s rapidly changing talent and innovation needs, consistent with the goals of our own strategic plan and the State’s 10-year economic strategy.” The degrees also advance the System’s commitment to double its output of engineering and computing graduates, which is supported by UMS TRANSFORMS, an initiative funded by historic investments from the Harold Alfond Foundation that helped create the multi-university Maine College of Engineering and Computing. Maine's public universities currently enroll more than 3,500 students in engineering and computing programs. Led by the University of Maine, the System conferred more than 1,200 engineering and computing degrees in the 2022-23 academic year — the most recent for which data is available.

?? What happens when you combine a liberal arts background with a PhD in Societal Computing? Peter Story’s journey through the Societal Computing PhD program at CMU shows just how impactful an interdisciplinary approach can be. In this article, Peter shares how CMU’s flexibility allowed him to pivot from technical work on privacy policies to a focus on helping people adopt security tools. Today, as an assistant professor at Clark University, Peter continues to apply his training by developing tools to protect journalists from cyber threats. If you’re considering a PhD program where technology meets societal impact, Peter’s story is one you won’t want to miss. ?? #K12 #CS4All #STEM #WorkforceDevelopment #EconomicDevelopment Kudos Michigan. This is huge. >By fall 2027, all public high schools in Michigan are mandated to offer at least one computer science course. >This initiative is aimed at preparing students for future careers in high-demand fields like technology. >Understanding computer science is essential for success in a tech-driven world, particularly in AI and cybersecurity. >A significant challenge is the shortage of qualified computer science teachers, especially in underserved areas. https://lnkd.in/eaCwg94E

Curriculum Transformation is Essential in CS/IT/IS/DS/AI: Back in 2002, I joined the faculty at St Cloud State University (SCSU) in BS Computer Network Modelling and Simulation. Years later we were fortunate to recruit two new faculty members and transformed the degree to BS in Network and Information Systems Security. One faculty member relentlessly worked toward modifying the degree to BS in Cyber Security but left to pursue a new opportunity. Today, I am happy to note that as an affiliate member of SCSU, the BS in Cyber Security is still thriving. St. Cloud State University recently took first place at the 2025 Minnesota State Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC), held by the Minnesota State IT Center of Excellence. https://lnkd.in/gedimUup Here is the synopsis of the competition: "In a controlled virtual environment, CCDC competitors assume administrative and protective duties for an existing “commercial” network — typically a small company with over 50 users, seven to 10 servers and standard Internet services such as a web server, mail server and e-commerce site. Each team begins the competition with an identical set of hardware and software and is scored on their ability to detect and respond to outside threats, maintain the availability of existing services such as mail servers and web servers, respond to business requests such as the addition or removal of additional services and balance security needs against business needs. Throughout the competition, an automated scoring engine periodically verifies each team’s services’ functionality and availability, and traffic generators feed simulated user traffic into the competition network. A volunteer Red Team (Ethical Hackers) provides the “external threat” of all Internet-based services, which allows the teams to match their defensive skills against live opponents (hackers)." SCSU will now compete at the Regional CCDC on March 14–15, that will be hosted by Purdue University Northwest in Hammond, Indiana. Perhaps college, university and industrial administrators will read this message, and take risks to invests more into transformational and experiential CS/IT/IS/DS/AI degree programs. USC Viterbi School of Engineering 530 (CSci 530): Security Systems - Fall 2023? Instructors Clifford Neuman This class will give students an overview of network and distributed systems security, its workings, and its role in protecting data and computing resources. The course begins with a discussion of the fundamental problem and tools in protecting a computing system and proceeds through the various security services that apply to these systems. By the end of the course, at the highest level, students will be able to: Discuss the technical, business, societal, and ethical aspects of problems in computer security. Describe and assess a broad range of security systems deployed or suggested for solving those problems. Understand the fundamental mathematics and engineering underlying security systems. Judge the suitability of security systems for particular applications. Know how to develop new security systems and features.
