Check out this wonderful feature from New York University on Dr Sharif Tabbah, DPT, CSCS and his journey to opening Alkeme Sports RX
As co-owner and lead physical therapist at Alkeme Sports RX in Miami, FL, physical therapy alum Dr Sharif Tabbah, DPT, CSCS (DPT ’12) is using his extensive experience with rehabilitation protocols and functional performance training to help professional athletes thrive. ?????? #VioletPride ?? According to Tabbah, as a student in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, “Steinhardt did a great job of getting us out into the field for clinical experiences…You started doing clinical observations in your second semester, and by the end, we were all exposed to between eight and 12 different placements, from in-patient work at a local medical college to working with inmates in a prison.” One of Tabbah’s rotations in his final DPT year was at a sports clinic in New York, where his clinical instructor told him about another clinic in Miami that worked with professional athletes and thought it would be a good fit. Together, Tabbah and his instructor got the clinic approved as a rotation site within the program, and the organization liked him so much that they hired him full-time after graduation. That experience working with hundreds of professional athletes from the NFL, MLB, NBA, USA Olympic Teams, and more led him to open his own clinic. In 2015, Tabbah co-founded Athletix Rehab and Recovery (now Alkemē Sports RX) in Miami, which grew into three internationally recognized sports rehab and performance facilities over eight years of business. His work with various professional athletes has been featured on the NFL Network, ESPN, Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, and The Wall Street Journal. Congratulations to Marcus?Ziebold SPT for finishing his last clinical rotation with us at Empower Physical Therapy and Fitness! We are so fortunate to cross paths with so many talented clinicians and we know Marcus will be a great addition to the field. For the last 12 weeks, he has learned from our diverse team and worked hands-on with patients in collaboration with Jenna Harris PT, DPT, lead physical therapist at our Bloomfield Hills location! Join us in celebrating all his hard work and read about his experience below! Q: Congratulations Marcus! You have finally finished your clinical rotation and will be graduating soon, are you ready to walk across the stage? A: Yes, very ready! I’m excited to start applying for positions and treating new patients. Q: What did you like about working at Empower in Bloomfield Hills? A: It was interesting to learn about all of the different certifications a PT can choose to get. I spoke with all of the clinicians here about their different specialties, what they learned, and why they chose them. As a lifelong athlete, I’ve always had an interest in sports, there are few sport-specific certifications I’d like to get, specifically football players and golfers. Q: Did you have any experiences here that inspired your next move as a DPT? A: Yes! When I do start to look for jobs after getting certified I will be looking for clinics with great communication and teamwork skills. The clinicians work together with everyone, especially the patient’s physicians which helped us learn more about each condition and create the best plans of care for each patient. Q: What did you learn about the profession in your time here? A: I learned a lot about different conditions in my time here. A lot of new grads start in sports PT, which is great, but you don’t get the opportunity to learn about as many conditions as you would in a clinic like this that sees everything. I also got to learn about treating a wide range of ages, our youngest patient was 13 years old and the oldest was 93 years old. Q: What did you like about working at Empower this summer? A: I have never worked with Redcord technology before, we treated a few patients with a combination of Redcord and Alter G, (anti-gravity treadmill). The results were great, patients often felt much better, and the results were advanced from one appointment to another. Q: What should someone know about Empower that they may not? A: Empathy comes first regarding patient care, for everything. If they are feeling any pain whether it be physical, emotional, or otherwise, the clinicians listen and care to help. Productivity is at a good level here, and they are very flexible with scheduling needs and understanding different life circumstances. Thank you so much for a great 12 weeks, Marcus! Good luck with your exams, we are excited to see what you do next and have every confidence that you will be a great PT. #ptstudent #waynestateuniversity #healthcareworkers

Raise your hand if you're a physical therapy practice owner who is struggling to hire, but believes they have "a really awesome culture". ???? Here's the problem???? Your culture is probably only awesome from the "inside looking out". . . You need to build a clinic culture that is also awesome from the "outside looking in". You have to invest time and energy into building trust and engagement within your local PT community. . . . BEFORE you need to hire. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Hiring physical therapists is hard not because there "aren't any PTs" or because "they're too expensive". It's probably because you haven't built as good as a culture you thought. Harsh, but the truth. What are some examples of incredible brand-building in physical therapy?? #physicaltherapy #brand #marketing PS. I think Dr. Josh Funk from Rehab 2 Perform does an EXCELLENT job at brand ????

Hey, Physical Therapist “Employees” who “dream” of their own practice… How long will you let fear stop you? If I asked you to design your perfect career on paper….how many of you would write: 1.) See multiple patients at the same time. 2.) Earn, Accrue, and Request 3-4 weeks of time off (out of an entire year) to enjoy your family time and vacations. 3.) Be pushed to bill a certain number of units. 4.) Be so swamped with documentation and administrative burden that patient care is always a rush job. 5.) “Maybe” get a 2.5-5% annual raise and watch compensation grow at a snails pace for entire career.

Industry Insights from a Physical Therapist licensed in 51 States: An interesting side effect of being licensed in every state is that my personal information (phone/email) is sold/found by recruiters looking for PTs. Let me tell you what the 5-10 recruiting emails/texts/calls I get every day tell me about PT in the united States. 1. There is a HUGE shortage of PTs everywhere, but more rural states target and incentivize you much more (makes sense as there are 10x less PTs in Wyoming than California). 2. Everyone is having a hard time hiring and retaining. I get messages from privately own practices, big box PTs, SNFs, digital health, hospitals, travel contracts. No single part of the PT industry is better off they need PTs everywhere. Meaning there is tons of opportunities to find the niche you want to excel in. 3. Pay is still not commiserate with our education level but it is improving rapidly, however, there will continue to be a struggle hiring and retaining staff when non-clinical jobs pay more with less time/physical demand. Place any questions you may have below about what the job market looks like for PTs in the U.S. I would be happy to answer them.
