I could come here to discuss the journey of building Roots & Wings Tutoring—the hard days, the low days, the great days, and the growth. But the truth is, there’s one thing I want to focus on: the passion behind being an educator. There’s indescribable joy in watching a child transition from not understanding a concept to experiencing that lightbulb moment. It’s exhilarating to witness when a child reads their first word, knowing the hard work that went into making that happen. It’s heartwarming to see a child regain their confidence and stand proudly in their own skin. Families breathe a sigh of relief when their child starts to thrive both in and out of the classroom. And let’s not forget the hilarious things kids say—the absurdity of our day-to-day interactions, from “Don’t eat that” to “No, I don’t keep unicorns at my home; do you?” I’ve discussed this with colleagues many times, but I believe it’s time to set our egos aside and refocus on why we entered education in the first place: the children. Those remarkable little beings will shape the future of our world. We all recognize the challenges facing education and the systemic changes needed, especially in special needs education. However, I think we need to shift from a “fix it” mindset to truly listening to what families and children need. What they desire most is to be heard, to feel supported, and to trust that we will provide their child with a happy childhood, allowing them to be whoever they want to be—whether that’s an artist or an entrepreneur. It takes a village to raise a child, and that was one of the main reasons I entered education—the sense of community it fosters. We must work to break down barriers between school and home. Students spend 90% of their time in school during their primary years, so it should be a wonderful place to be. Change is possible, even if it comes with some challenges along the way. Numerous incredible education businesses, schools, and Edtech companies are already making strides toward this vision. Lastly, and I mean this sincerely—even if it sounds cheesy—if we all come together—teachers, parents, and children—we can achieve so much. There is a school for every child, a path for every family, and an opportunity for educators to rediscover their passion. The journey starts with us.

Hi, I’m Maryna, I’m a parent and I feel like a misfit here. I was developing my own firm when I had my first child, followed by a second. I realized I didn’t want someone else to raise and educate my kids. So, I chose to homeschool them and stay with them full-time. This meant putting my business growth on hold. Downgrading my company wasn’t easy. I missed the financial stability and recognition that came with leading a team. Every time I logged into LinkedIn, I saw my peers attending conferences and growing their businesses. I felt out of place, as if I didn’t belong in this professional world anymore. Yet, I knew I made the right choice for my family. Homeschooling became my deep-seated mission. I focused on developing my personal expertise and personal growth instead of expanding my company. This allowed me to be present for my kids while still growing professionally. The financial strain and professional isolation were real. As an independent expert, I didn’t earn as much as I would have leading a larger team. Every time I saw my peers’ successes, I questioned my choices, feeling insignificant and doubting my worth in the professional world. Despite the challenges, I remain firm in my belief that parents should have the chance to raise their children without facing financial hardship. Society often pressures mothers to prioritize their careers over their family roles, but I believe we can have both personal and professional growth without sacrificing our families. In today’s digital age, we have the tools to redefine what work looks like. To bridge my passion for homeschooling with my entrepreneurial aspirations, my husband and I decided to create a platform for homeschooling families (soon to be available for homeschooling families throughout Poland). This platform allows parents to organize and host educational events and workshops at the comfort of their home, inviting other homeschooling families to join. It’s like Airbnb for homeschooling, fostering real-life interactions and building strong communities. The platform will enable parents (and even kids) to share their talents and gifts with other learners, focusing on experiential rather than theoretical learning. Looking ahead, I envision this platform evolving into a marketplace where stay-at-home parents and homeschoolers can offer their services and products to like-minded individuals. This will support professional development, provide financial stability, and allow parents to stay with their children, while teaching entrepreneurial skills to kids. Is it true that I learned everything I needed to know in Kindergarten? This week in Georgia the kids are starting back to school. My son is starting 8th grade, which reminds me how quickly time is moving and how precious every moment is that I have with him. As I heard the school buses running through our neighborhood and saw the elementary school kids waiting with their parents, it got me thinking about the old book "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" (which, ironically, was published the year before I started Kindergarten). I've never read the book, but I started thinking about some of the basic lessons that I learned in Kindergarten and what they mean to me today: 1. "Be kind to others" ? This might be the single most important lesson that I learned. One which we as adults so easily forget. Show kindness to others. Everyday. It's really not hard to do. Sometimes all it takes is a kind text, email, or phone call to offer a word of encouragement. 2. "Share with others" ? This one is also a really important lesson that we easily forget. In the daily hustle and grind of career and the pursuit of more, it's easy to forget that there are a lot of struggling people in the world. Maybe instead of going out for an expensive dinner we could be charitable and help someone in need? What if we, gasp, sacrificed what we want in order to help someone else? 3. "Keep your hands to yourselves" ? We live in a culture that's obsessed with the pursuit of more. Bigger houses, nicer cars, fancier vacations. All it takes is a scroll on any social media platform to quickly become jealous of someone else's stuff. So what if my next door neighbor has a brand new Tesla and I'm driving a 12 year-old Dodge Durango? It's paid for. It runs well. It gets me where I need to go just as effectively as the Tesla. We spend way too much time worrying about what everyone else is doing and trying to keep up with the Joneses. What if we just focused gratitude for the blessings that we have? ? Maybe it's true that I learned all I needed to know in Kindergarten. Maybe if we all practiced these lessons a little more, we could make our communities and our world so much better. ? So, here's the ???????? – I've been quietly building stuff for nearly a decade, and now I'm finally ready to join the conversation here. Well, "ready" might be a stretch. Growing up in a low-income household, I understood from an early age that education was my pathway to a better life. I was incredibly fortunate to have amazing teachers and mentors who believed in me and pushed me to dream big. Today, those dreams have become reality in ways I never imagined: I started my first company, ????????????????, in undergrad with just $60 for web hosting. ArgoPrep is an e-learning & publishing company currently serving over 1 million students nationwide. We publish K-12 workbooks for core academic subjects that are used by schools, students, and various state programs. At the age of 23, I took another leap with my two co-founders and acquired a private ??????-???????????? in Brooklyn. Maxing out credit cards to cover the $100k monthly expenses was terrifying, but the risk paid off. Today, our preschool employs 27 dedicated teachers who nurture 120 young minds daily. Most recently, we launched ????????????????, a coding and robotics center for students ages 6-15. What started as an idea has now grown to two thriving locations in NYC, with four more set to open in the coming months. All of this has been achieved while remaining fully bootstrapped – no outside funding, and no plans to change that approach. It's a testament to the power of teamwork and smart resource management. Working with 50+ incredible individuals across these ventures, I'm humbled daily. There are moments when I can't believe I'm living my dream – changing lives through education, just as mine was changed. I'm eager to engage with this community of educators and entrepreneurs. So I’ve been quietly working on an EdTech Startup for the last six months. And it’s LIT. First Gen Lit to be exact. Let me back up……… I met my co-founder for the first time at Arlan Hamilton All Access Pass L.A. event called “Write Your Headline” in 2023. There were only 20 of us in the room who took a chance and bet on ourselves flying out to LA. to learn from and spend time with a young living legend at an in-person mastermind. I knew after making that investment in myself, I would never be the same. Returning to Charlotte, Nicole Fenner and I started to meet at local coffee shops to have brainstorming and mastermind sessions trying to keep the momentum from the event. I’ve never created a business this fast nor have I ever agreed to partner with a complete stranger and get in bed with someone I barely knew in partnership to start something great. I’m still in shock, but God did! From the moment we decided to start First Gen Lit earlier this year it's been nothing but one confirmation after another that we were onto something incredible that truly has the potential to change our lives and the world. Introducing First Gen Lit, our innovative, education technology startup positioned to transform digital literacy in underserved and under-resourced communities through AI-driven digital platforms. Our primary focus is enhancing children's engagement with reading comprehension and writing. We aim to bridge the literacy and comprehension gap for children aged 5 to 13 by merging entertainment with education on our e-reading platform, ReadSMARTER. Our team, experts in education, technology, and child development, is uniquely equipped for this mission. Later this year we will be rolling out curriculum, programs, and resources for digital literacy in Adult education serving high seniors, recent college graduates, and young professionals.
