BAU is where the building industry meets: architects, investors, tradesmen and everyone involved in the planning, construction and design of buildings. It is a place where business relationships are formed, grown and nurtured. ???? We surveyed exhibitors and visitors at BAU 2023, and the results back this up. But let the numbers speak for themselves! ?? 94% of exhibitors stated that they were able to successfully cultivate existing business relationships at BAU 2023. Of these, 64% rated this opportunity as excellent and 30% as good. Visitors were similarly positive about the opportunity to cultivate business relationships, with 70% rating it as excellent. These figures encourage us even more to offer exhibitors and visitors a platform for exchange and networking. I am very grateful and humbled to have been nominated as Fenland Business Person of the Year. ? However, this is something that I find incredibly awkward, I don’t like focussing on myself and the achievements of the collective are down to the whole team and not only me. ? The interview with the judges last week was uncomfortable for me, however, it did allow me to reflect on the great progress that we have made over the past 3 years, there is too much to mention, but here are some highlights: - Set short, medium and long term goals with action plans - Evolved our vision and mission building on our core values of customer service and creating the type of environment we want to work in - Untangling of ownership and responsibility roles, clarifying roles and responsibilities - Changed our mindset - Always seeking ways to improve from the smallest to biggest details - Recruited key team members that fit with our culture - Joined forces with Jan JLM Health and Safety Ltd - Expanded our White & Eddy service offering - Improved processes and procedures with the focus on simplicity - Formed WE Consulting Engineers allowing us to offer Structural and Civil Engineering - Launched new and updated websites - Created a team to focus solely on our residential extensions and alterations projects - Arranged business coaching and appointed a non-executive chair Andy Leet - Working with the wonderful Joe Mills, FCIPD Tree Academy to improve our people focus, communication and human connection ? This has all been driven with a focus on our clients and our vision of: Simplifying the Process of Creating buildings for our clients and to deliver spaces that improve the lives of people that use them This underpins everything we do! ? It’s not been without its challenges, but I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved to date and there is more to come!! ? More to follow on that this afternoon... ? Loved being down in London yesterday and attending NLA's Retrofit Summit at The Guildhall. Heard some great speakers taking us through interesting case studies such as the The London Museum, The Elephant / 318 Oxford St, New Zealand House and Zodiac. Was pleased to also see some iconic Northern projects shared with the audience by shedkm and Civic Engineers including Fort Dunlop, Littlewoods and Park Hill. Retrofitting can be a cost-effective alternative to demolishing and rebuilding, however it can also present significant challenges (and costs) especially with older buildings that have outdated systems or poor initial construction (‘bad bones’). Some insightful discussions amongst the panellists with agreement on some key points: ·??????A requirement for more consistent government policy as well as what actually defines Zero Carbon / Net Zero ·??????More collaboration and data sharing across industry with the need for data to be richer. ·??????Better cataloging of building information and materials used providing invaluable information for future retrofit. A requirement for a central place to access this data - more transparency. ·??????All buildings need a strategy to decarbonise. ·??????Not all buildings are fit for retrofit. ·??????Retrofit requires passion, commitment, communication and a champion(s)! After a complex site assembly process and extensive consultations with Camden Council, we leveraged high-quality architectural design principles and aligned with the London Plan's encouragement of tall buildings near transportation nodes. This approach enabled us to successfully obtain planning consent for a landmark 10-storey mixed-use tower adjacent to Finchley Road and Frognal Overground Station. Constructing within such close proximity to a platform presented challenges, and our pre-planning efforts included extensive negotiations with TFL and the establishment of a Basic Asset Protection Agreement (BAPA). Thank you NLA for the Retro fit summit, and to shedkm Civic Engineers HUB RESIDENTIAL LIMITED The Crown Estate Gensler Buro Four JLL Common Projects for the talks and case studies. Must admit retrofit as a new type of project description is glossing over that most of us have been doing this for years as cut and carve or refurbishment but if it gives focus to retaining as many existing buildings as possible then I’m with it. The case studies were impressive amd the effort clients and teams will go to, to reduce, reuse and recycle. Good to see so much of Londons existing stock being refurbished. We should not only focus on the cut and carve and the structure issues but also on the simple workspace refurbishment and getting more clarity on the supply chain circular economy and clear certification of accreditation of new products especially M&E where the majority of the cost is. Most simple refurbishments throw away the old finishes and services and most of us I feel would push for recycled products from the circular economy if we had a database or some form of accreditation to refer to. Anyone agree? I liked the concept of architects redesigning the past, that struck a chord.
