So it looks like the National Basketball Association (NBA) media rights deal ended up about 2.5X the old deal, but there is an expanded collection of content, so the "upside" is a bit lower. Key takeaways and learnings: - No surprise, FAANG with the big win. Amazon Prime - with the upside of their global reach, beat Warner Bros. Discovery. Interesting side note: in 2019, before the FAANG sports pivot, the NBA was the lead-in to ONE on TNT during the start of my tenure there. Now it looks to be back to that w/ both sports orgs on Prime. Love that. About $2B. - ESPN and ABC regular games and the finals. Also global. About $2.6B - NBCUniversal / Peacock, also about $2.5B. - Fragmentation wins the day for the league again (add games, events, and split things up to get bigger checks) but the consumer can lose here on cost and ease of finding games. ?? TV is still the most popular way for sports fans to watch both games/matches and highlights. 47% watch sports events on TV at least weekly (versus 38% online). ?? That being said, social media is integral to the way sports viewers engage with sports. Those who watch sports games on TV/online are just as likely to keep up with sports by following professional sports leagues on social media as they are to talk about it with friends and family (52% and 51% respectively). In fact, almost a quarter of sports fans globally say that having a social media feed on the screen would make their live event experience more exciting. This rises to 3 in 10 among Ultimate Fighting Championship and Formula 1 fans, and 35% of #TourDeFrance fans. Tour de France and Formula 1 fans are also over 70% more likely than the average sports fans to want more stats visible on the screen in real-time, while UFC fans are 83% more likely to want live-betting features.

Last weekend, Indianapolis hosted the #NBAAllStar game. Ten years ago, less than a quarter of shots in NBA games were three-pointers. Last season almost 40% of shots were taken beyond the three-point line. The best players and teams have learned that both the quality AND quantity of shots taken in a game matter. Sports media rights landscape continues to look good as the second major deal of 2024 lands. And, as no surprise to me, the company - Netflix - that claimed to have no interest in live sports is now in the live sports business with the WWE. Let's look at the details for "Raw": - $500M a year, $5B total, roughly 2X the prior deal w/ Peacock - WWE spread the bets, USA, CW, Netflix, a la National Football League (NFL) - Outside of the US, Netflix gets it ALL in 2025 - Netflix is officially in the global sports livestream business now (2025) What to watch next: - Netflix and Peacock have a year to look at data and fight for the rest in '26 - Does this mean MORE sports deal for Netflix coming? Really, the analysis here is: - More tier 1 sports to FAANG, no surprise - Sports is so "sticky" that buyers are willing to pay the price - AAA content will get the $$$, even in a post "peak TV"/cutback era - Obviously, with ZIRP over and profit mattering, less will be spent elsewhere #sports #streaming #wwe #TKO #netflix #mediarights

YouTube is not seen as a threat or cannibalistic to those streams, rather it’s complementary. And its working very well for them.
