When BMW first launched the sixth generation 'G11' version of its top saloon, the 7 Series, it elevated itself back into contention at the top end of the boardroom-level luxury sedan segment. But by 2019, that sector had moved on, hence the need for this significantly revised model. Recently, the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado with electric vehicles being put to the test. In its 102nd year running, the race features a brutal climb from 9,390 feet to 14,110 feet. Internal combustion engines with atmospheric induction would experience significant changes on engine torque with the variation in air pressure up this race - at the summit it would almost be running on half-throttle. Electric vehicles on the other hand have no altitude problem - they make the same peak torque in the vacuum of space as they do at sea level. The top time came from a modified Ford F-150 Lightning, driven by all-time Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record holder Romain Dumas, beating out the second place-holding 2024 Wolf Aurobay by about 11 seconds. Other key electric vehicle appearances included the Hyundai Ioniq 5N TA spec, driven by Dani Sordo, and racer Gardner Nichols, who drove a wrapped Rivian R1T in the race. This was also the first time an electric vehicle has served as the race’s pace car, with an Acura ZDX filling that role. See the full standings from the race below, as provided by Live Timing.
