It was an incredibly beautiful early summer morning in the suburban industry park. Business as usual at the bustling marketing research firm. The sun was shining from a clear blue sky. The CEO kindly asked me, the just onboarded 18-year-old trainee, to take his car to … I can’t recall exactly where. Somewhere downtown Stockholm anyway. But I do remember the car. Not sure about the exact model but a big, brand new American executive monster. Could have been a Cadillac Fleetwood or Lincoln Continental. Dark blue with tan leather upholstery … cool electrified functions and features, and the sound of the big V8 was ... Oh yes! An exciting moment for a kid barely out of driving school, with no money in sight for a first own car. So life was GREAT! … until, half an hour later, I got a bit too teenage cocky in a busy roundabout. The other car …Oh no! 60 years and at least 20 own cars later I still wonder why I didn’t lose my license on the spot. Or, even more important, why I didn’t get fired after the embarrassing fender-bender. A bit worse than a fender-bender, actually. The CEO was upset, alright, and I was far too scared and ashamed to even attempt talking myself out of the mess. So, again, why? My total, regretful admission of guilt? My boyish charm? The beautiful summer day? Sh-t happens, but life goes on. 40 years ago this week I moved 500miles from home to Coventry to start my career at Austin Rover as a graduate trainee in Product Development at Canley. It was exciting times and I had a passion to try to do my bit for the UK Automotive sector. Not long after starting we were introduced to Warwick University and learned the opportunities through academia and industry working closer. Later I enjoyed various training courses at Arden House and the ATC (Advanced Technology Centre) where in the early 90’s we wrote a paper titled 2020 Vision on trends in automotive (we didn’t see the electric revolution!) Yesterday, I visited both the APC and WMG again to see how things have changed and discuss how to work even closer together to move the dial in UK car design and manufacture. What’s changed you could ask? In some ways not a lot - engineers solving the problems of the day with always insufficient funding. In others we have moved a long way. Today, lots of pieces of the jigsaw are there. In the UK we have innovations and manufacturing solutions we can implement and we have the people who can do it. We do, however, need to break out of that very British habit of being modest and start shouting about our capabilities to get the backing it deserves from the investment community. Governments have been supporting innovation and now look like there are green shoots of thinking towards longer term strategic industrial strategy. To me though, right now, it still looks easier to innovate here in the UK then export the thinking and implement the industrialisation bit somewhere else in the World. We need to right that issue soon!

20 years ago I was terrified … standing at the gate waiting to interview at Continental The moment standing at the big gate of the plant St?cken, -I felt very small and insignificant. The plant: with the energy towers, the truck gate and metal fences around reminded me of stories like “They Divided the Sky” (Der geteilte Himmel) by Christa Wolf. Clean workers going in at shift start and then moving towards showers tired and dusted with carbon black. I was incredibly nervous and had a lot of respect for the challenge of starting at such a large company. But apparently ?me“ was what they were looking for! After my internship I was able to move into a “real” role seamlessly. To the contrary of my expectations- right from day 1, I got integrated into the team, was allowed to really take over challenging tasks and bringing in my ideas. Even as a youngster without experience in the field. For me, the biggest challenge was calling top managers by their first names, as I was raised to show respect by formally addressing German adults as Mr. or Mrs. I vividly remember the Corporate Entry Conference ! Very happy that two of this cohort are still closely around me today: Christoph Willeke and Matthias Metzger. The company has changed and so have I. Good! As change is natural. I was moved countless times in reorganizations, joining Tires, but then also to Automotive, Group and ContiTech. Two years ago, I started my professional career as a dual student at Continental in Business Informatics. It is frightening to realise how quickly time flies, how quickly I have gained maturity, determination and work experience, how quickly my studies are coming to an end. During this time, I was able to meet people who inspired me and guided me with their experience. I got to know people who have become my best friends and always will be. In my last practical phase (4th semester), I was given the unique opportunity to visit a Continental plant abroad. I chose the sub-company Hoosier Racing Tire - one of the most successful racing tire manufacturers in the world. I would not regret this decision for a second! It was an indescribable experience. I will return to Germany as a stronger person. Hoosier was facing a major reorganization of its data management. II had the task of independently designing and implementing a data warehouse system in order to create a proof of concept. I was able to familiarise myself with a variety of systems such as #AWS #EC2, #Redshift and #S3. I have developed the basis for decision-making and made crucial decisions myself. I used and expanded my large network and laid the foundations for a modern data management at Hoosier. During this time, Continental's corporate values were constantly present: I was given the #freedomToAct by being able to work according to my ideas and I was given the #trust in my work and the correctness of my decisions. The help I have received through my network from all parts of the world - Germany, Romania, Japan and others - proves our #ForOneAnother. We all work under the same flag and have the same goals and aspirations: To make Continental a winner. That is our #passionToWin. I was able to make a small contribution to this through my immense efforts on the project: Keeping Hoosier ahead in a highly competitive market!
