Volkswagen and Audi are both building EV charging hubs, using second-life EV batteries, as well as pre-production new batteries from manufacturing. Interestingly, Tesla is taking a different route, manufacturing BESS they brand Megapacks, adding about 10% to their revenue in 2024. The market for second-life batteries is developing just as fast the battery market itself, and consists not only of the end-of-life EV batteries repurposed for less demanding applications, but also of new batteries from manufacturing. The development of solid-state batteries could be a game-changer in the EV industry. ???? In a recent interview, my colleague Raphael Rettig estimated that these batteries could potentially slash charging times to less than 10 minutes. But there's a catch. Raphael also warns, "I don't believe that solid-state will become a major player in the volume electric vehicles segment before the middle of next decade." The reason? Today is World EV Day, which reminds us of the need to transition from fossil-fuel-driven modes of transport to sustainable alternatives like electric vehicles (EVs) ???? Intellectual property (IP) is at the heart of this transition since it protects innovation and enables collaboration. Many of the most transformative EV advancements have been protected by patents including: ? Toyota Motor Corporation’s Hybrid Powertrain – In 1997 Toyota launched the Prius, the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle and arguably the first step in the transition away from internal combustion engine vehicles. Toyota protected its hybrid technology from the beginning, filing hundreds of patent applications. ?? Tesla’s Battery Management Systems – Innovations in this area have improved battery management in multiple ways such as optimising charging, increasing battery life and improving thermal management. ?? Qualcomm’s Wireless Charging System – Plug-in EVs typically need to be plugged in to charge, but wireless EV charging allows for such vehicles to be recharged when positioned over a pad on the ground. Qualcomm patented their developments in this area and demonstrated the effectiveness in collaboration with Formula E. This technology is now being extended to wireless charging roads, which are being trialled in locations ranging from Detroit, USA to Norway. GM concluded the Ultium one-size fits all battery is not the way to go.?GM wants a variety of chemistries and cell shapes. Tesla and BYD have custom-tailored battery packs for each model. The comes subsequent to many GM Ultium hiccups, such as enduring headaches with the automation of packing battery cells into modules, forcing GM to delay the introduction of many new EV models.?The result is GM missed its target of producing 400,000 EVs by mid-2024. GM, like other legacy manufacturers must also address the investment community which wants EVs to be immediately profitable.?The investment market has no patience for years required for a return on EV investments.? Investors are pressuring GM to manufacture batteries that fewer costs, fewer parts and less weight.?This requires flexible chaises along lines similar to those of Volkswagen with its MEB platform and Hyundai/Kia with its E-GMP approach. In April 2024, GM decided that its second generation battery would stem from a joint venture with Samsung SDI. The re-introduction of the Bolt calls for the vehicle to be equipped with a less expensive LFP battery, that would bring the Bolt cost?down by $6,000. Only Chinese battery firms have conceived LFP batteries, which presents a conundrum for GM in light of Chinese content barriers. Thus, it's still not known what company would supply the battery pack for the Bolt. Ford has circumvented the Chinese content barrier with an upcoming battery factory in Marshall Michigan that will manufacture China's CATL batteries under a license from CATL. LFP batteries represent one fifth of global battery market. GM has not yet determined what its battery strategy will be.

Geely’s new battery boasts 50-year service life, 3,500 charge cycles ? The groundbreaking LFP battery technology is aimed at significantly boosting the resale value of used electric vehicles. ? Chinese giant Geely has unveiled its new LFP battery cell, featuring 192 Wh/kg energy density, a 50-year service life, rapid charging to 80% in under 20 minutes, and minimal capacity loss in cold weather. ? This technology, akin to iron phosphate batteries used in Tesla’s base Model 3 and popular power stations like the Anker SOLIX F1200, addresses various concerns about electric cars beyond their price. ? The battery excels with 3,500 charge cycles, equivalent to about a million kilometers, surpassing the high internal resistance of long blade batteries supplied by BYD to Tesla. ? The Chinese company also added that its LFP battery promises significant benefits for the used electric car market, as EVs could maintain performance over more than 600,000 miles with minimal capacity loss. This durability equates to approximately 50 years of service life, considering average annual driving distances. ? Moreover, Geely’s adoption of carbon nanotubes and enhanced cover film accelerates the movement of lithium ions, achieving an impressive charging time of just 17 minutes to bring the battery from 10% to 80% capacity. ? Due to improved ion transfer, Geely’s Aegis Short Blade Battery experiences only a 10% range loss in extremely cold conditions, matching CATL’s fast-charging LFP cell introduced last year. ? Geely will initially deploy its new LFP cells in Galaxy E5 SUVs before making them available to other customers. To guarantee the durability of the short-blade LFP battery, Geely subjected it to rigorous tests: exposure to open flames, puncturing with nails, rolling over, submersion in corrosive seawater, and operation in freezing conditions. ? According to the company, the thermally resistant separator and self-healing electrode technology passed all durability tests with flying colors, paving the way for EVs with a 50-year battery service life.
