Access to justice is essential for individuals and society at large. Law influences many aspects of social life and recent research shows that 2 in 3 people have faced a legal issue in the past four years. The most common issues? Employment, finance, welfare and benefits (28%), wills, trusts, probate (26%), consumer problems (26%), and property-related matters (25%). These often arise during major life events. Despite this, many do not seek legal help due to a lack of awareness of their legal rights, difficulty navigating the legal system, financial constraints, uncertainty about where to find legal advice, physical inaccessibility, or a lack of confidence that they will receive help from someone who understands their background and experiences. Research highlights the negative impact unresolved legal issues can have on our physical and mental health. In the last quarter, the ARU Law Clinic provided free legal advice to over 200 clients on family, employment, immigration, personal injury, and medical negligence issues. In times of economic, political, social and technological change, access to legal help is more important than ever. This entire talk is great if you have not listened to it. Whether you work for/with nonprofits, support nonprofits, or any other sector. Great questions and points to make for funders who raise questions about "overhead." "So in the for-profit sector, the more value you produce,?the more money you can make.?But we don't like nonprofits to use money?to incentivize people to produce more in social service.?We have a visceral reaction to the idea that anyone?would make very much money helping other people.?Interestingly, we don't have a visceral reaction?to the notion that people would make a lot of money?not helping other people."

TP is moving forward

Last night was very humbling. I had the opportunity to return to the place that gave me the tools to restart my life, and I will forever be grateful for that. Since it is Movember, which focuses on Mens Health, I have a story to share. I recently passed the 6yr mark of sobriety, but it felt a bit different this year. The first 5 years of sobriety, I took it very seriously and put all my effort into changing my frame of mind from very negative to positive. After receiving my 5-year medallion last year, things changed. I started taking every aspect of my life for granted because my life on paper looked great. I didn't take my sobriety and spirituality serious, my ego was telling me, "Jeff, you don't need that anymore. You got this." I was isolating myself and didn't reach out to my positive influences, which led to months of depression and recently planning my demise. Normal people would say, "You have a great life, how could you be depressed?" I suffer from depression because I'm not one of the normal people. I've suffered from depression since I was 13 years old, but fortunately, I now have the tools to recover. I share this because many men don't have the tools available. Please, if you're suffering inside, make a call and talk to someone. It may save your life.
