This week's podcast guests are...my first ever co-founders! I'm bad at being concise at big moments so let me give you the headlines. 1. I've co-founded a new company called Retrograde that's on a mission to democratise the creator industry using AI, helping all creators - no matter their size - earn more from their work. 2. I'm building it alongside two incredible tech entrepreneurs jake & Gary who've both built and sold previous companies within the tech space. Seeing as I've never had co-founders before (fumbled the bag when it came to sharing workload) I thought there was no better way to introduce them to you than getting them to the beige office of dreams and making them record a podcast with me! I wanted this episode to be like you'd stumbled into one of our meetings (but maybe slightly more entertaining), to give you a sense of what the reality of building a tech company is like & everything else that's happened in between. And let me tell you it's been a learning curve. More on that in the episode! The context you need is that over the last decade the creator industry has grown & matured massively to the point where there are now millions of creators of all sizes, and as a result it's become too large for a one-size-fits-all management model. I'm lucky enough to have worked - and continue working - with some of the most incredible talent agents in the business, but there are so many creators who can’t get access to that level of support, or the 20% of income model doesn’t make sense to them due to the simplicity of their deals, or are keen to self-manage but don’t have the time/infrastructure it requires! In an industry where we are seeing a huge shift towards authenticity, storytelling, emotional investment and connection... I'm hesitant to see how the future of creator marketing and talent management lies in AI. Grace is correct, it's hard to find a respectable and responsible management team. It's not accessible for everyone and while I agree with Grace's reasoning for wanting to invest in a platform like this, isn't it better that we focus on educating creators before using AI to undercut talent managers? This was one of the reasons I was driven to set up the ANYTHING BUT REGULAR Creator Academy. To educate Creators. My goal with this platform, is to bridge the gap between brands and creators and encourage conversations that solve problems in this industry. As a talent manager myself, I have been approached and 'ghosted' by the Tala team on multiple occasions, some for large projects that never came to fruition, with no explanation. This is what we need to improve, communication for creators. However, I am interested to see the functionality of the platform once it's live. Could it change our minds once we see how it works?!

Tem ?Nugmanov, CEO of Optemization, was on the podcast this week. Ironically… he cautioned Notion users on the idea of OVER-OPTIMIZING their workspaces. At LA Tech Week, some VC and founder types hit him with a question that stopped him in his tracks. — ”How do you take a workspace that is already a 4/5 to a 5/5?” Apparently, that's not a situation Tem deals with on the regular. But it got his gears turning, and he realized something key. The answer? Keep it simple, stupid. Tem sees tons of folks getting a little too excited about all the crazy stuff Notion can do. They get sucked into this never-ending cycle of tweaking and optimizing every little thing. But here's the reality: There's a point where all that extra effort starts to give diminishing returns. At some point, you just gotta call it good and start actually using the workflow. And here's the kicker: Even a "good enough" setup is going to get you most of the results you're after. So Tem's words of wisdom for all you Notion nerds out there? Don't get too carried away with all the bells and whistles. How are we working towards making Starling a care-rooted organisation? Episode 4 of my mini podcast is out now! In this episode I will unpick how we action the care practice 'intentions' within our organisation, so we can create the 'conditions for care' that we are looking for. Some basic ideas that inform our organisational work: 1. Co-design ? Working with our co-creators, team members, the wider community and ourselves to imagine what we want the organisation to look like. 2. Systems and Ways of Working ? Defining how we want to do the work and creating structures and processes to get that work done. 3. Reflective Structures and Practices ? Looking back and visioning forward on what is working and what needs to be tweaked, giving and receiving feedback, building new ways of working. 4. Knowledge and Awareness Building ? Incorporating new ideas from outside our organisation and from inside ourselves, asking broader questions and centring learning/development.
