As we approach the United Nations Fourth Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS-4) next week (27-30 May 2024), it is crucial to highlight the indispensable role of #coralreefs in these regions. “We are the ones that will suffer the most”. Hear from Winfred Mudong, Micronesia Conservation Trust, on why coral reefs are important for small islands and the people who depend on them. Video captions have been translated into ???? Spanish ??Coral reefs are not just beautiful underwater landscapes; they are lifelines for SIDS, providing essential ecosystem #services that support the livelihoods, food security, and economic stability of a billion people. ?? Home to 25 % of all marine life, coral reefs are #biodiversity hotspots that supports fisheries, which are a primary source of protein and income for many island communities. ?? Reefs act as natural barriers, protecting shorelines from erosion and the impact of storms and hurricanes. This is especially critical as #climatechange increases the frequency and severity of extreme weather events. ?? Healthy coral reefs attract tourists from around the world, generating significant revenue for SIDS #economies. Tourism not only creates jobs but also funds local infrastructure and #community projects. ??For many islanders, coral reefs hold #cultural and #spiritual importance, forming an integral part of their heritage and traditional practices. However, coral reefs are under threat due to the triple planetary crisis. It is imperative that we continue to push for stronger international commitments and collaborative efforts to #protect and #restore these vital ecosystems. By prioritising the #health of our coral reefs, we are investing in the #resilience and #prosperity of SIDS. ?? Haida Gwaii Islands: The Hill and Blow Hole: The Blow-Hole attraction is an underground catapult of water surge channels carved through the coastline rocks. The sea water in the ocean channels builds up and then spews out about 25 feet of water into the air. On the Haida Gwaii islands the Blow Hole is refereed to as "the gun".

* * * NEW Video release * * * Iceland LX - At the edge of the new Sundhnúkagígar lava field │ Part 156 ? * * * The Lava is now heading toward the small town Vogar?* * * ? 22 August 2024: Eruption #6 was the most northerly and the biggest one up to now. It started along the same 4-kilometre fissure as the December 2023 eruption. A second fissure opened up further north outside the lava field near Stóra-Skógfell and took over all the activity. Most of the lava flowed to the north and heading to the town Vogar. Meanwhile, Stóra-Skógfell has become an ‘óbrynnishólmi’, an isolated hill completely surrounded by lava flows. ? Start: Thursday 22 August 2024 at 21:25 hrs. End: Thursday 5 September 2024. Days of activity: 15. Initial lava flow: 1500- 2000 m3/sec. Fissure length: 7 km (??!) – including the northern fissure that took over. The fissure was not erupting all at the same time across its entire 7-kilometre length. Lava field: 15,8 km2.
