At the same AVINYAA symposium, I seized another opportunity to participate in NeuraMatrix, a machine learning and deep learning-based competition. While it was more about participation than winning, the experience was incredibly insightful. What’s an LSTM and how does it improve RNN? Let’s continue Alex’s academic journey. We already know that Alex builds knowledge year by year just like how an RNN remembers past data to process new information. But what happens when Alex reaches year 4 and the workload gets overwhelming? Not everything learned in the past is useful anymore. This is where LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) networks steps in. Just like Alex might focus on key topics for exams and forget less important details, an LSTM knows when to hold on to important information and when to let go of unnecessary data. LSTM uses three gates to manage this: -Forget Gate: Decides what old information to forget. - Input Gate: Chooses what new information to store. - Output Gate:Selects which information is important for the current task. LSTMs are powerful because they allow the model to focus on the right information for long-term tasks like processing long sentences, time-series data, or anything that involves sequences.
