? Why do so many alumni choose not to give back to their alma mater? Dr. Linda Wastyn, Ph.D., CFRE, GPC explored this question in her 2009 article, Why Alumni Don’t Give: A Qualitative Study of What Motivates Non-Donors to Higher Education (International Journal of Educational Advancement, 9(2), 96–108). While this research is over a decade old, its findings still resonate today. Here are some key barriers she identified: ??Perceived need - Many alumni don’t see their alma mater as financially “needy” compared to other causes. ??Value lens - Some view their education as a commodity they’ve already paid for, not an experience worth supporting beyond tuition. ??Misperceptions about impact - Non-donors often feel their gift is “too small to matter” or distrust how their contributions will be used. ??Personal priorities - Family obligations, spousal influence, or dissatisfaction with solicitation methods can impact giving decisions. ?? But what about 2025? Are there new reasons alumni hesitate to give? I’d love to hear your thoughts! #Fundraising #PhilanthropyResearch #HigherEd #AlumniGiving #BackoftheLibrary
