Earlier this month, our we found out that The Arts Based School in Winston-Salem was awarded $345K from the EPA's Clean School Bus Program to purchase an electric school bus. This new program is building a nationwide fleet of electric school buses through a ground-breaking investment of $5 billion to replace existing school buses with zero-emission and clean school buses. Harvard Study Shows Health & Climate Benefits of Electric School Buses ? Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health contributed to the growing body of research with a study focused on the adoption of electric school buses in the United States. The study examined the financial, health, and environmental impacts of replacing aging diesel school buses with electric models. Although the upfront costs of electric buses remain higher—$156,000 more than diesel buses when subsidies are removed—the study highlighted significant health benefits, including reduced air pollution and lower rates of childhood asthma. However, the anticipated vehicle-to-grid (V2G) revenues, initially estimated at $15,000 per year, were found to be much lower in practice, ranging between $40 and $400. Despite these challenges, the overall health and climate benefits make a strong case for continued investment in electrifying school transportation. I can’t get past this quote: “Diesel exhaust…disproportionately affects Black, Latino, Indigenous, and low-income communities.” As a Latino, diesel exhaust affects me more than my non-brown-skinned colleagues? Hell no. Don’t even go there. If we want electric buses to take a foothold, focus on the benefits and systemic advantages they offer over alternatives. But don’t you dare pretend you’re somehow “saving” people of color with this misplaced saviorism. If you want to help poor, colored people, go build them a school. Don’t replace one thing with a model number you like more and call it salvation. I’m doing just fine, thank you very much. Go save yourself. #climate #climatechange
