As some events at the 2024 World Health Assembly focus on achieving universal health coverage it is important to amplify discussions on the role of Primary Health Care (PHC) in achieving this objective. I led the writing of some key resources vital to WHO staff and their partners which provide a comprehensive summary of the strategic objectives, and essential processes of applying a PHC lens to investments from Global Health Initiative (GHI) funding like Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, The Global Fund, and The Global Financing Facility (GFF). Publication Alert ??: Thrilled to share our recent publication “Designing a PHC Toolbox for Global Development Partners”. Our work focuses on the vital intersection of Primary Health Care (PHC) and Global Health Initiatives (GHIs), emphasizing the importance of aligning GHI support with national health strategies to advance health equity and achieve universal health coverage. In this paper, we introduce the PHC-GHI Toolbox; a comprehensive set of resources designed to assist countries in effectively utilizing funding from GHIs, such as Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, The Global Fund, and the Global Financing Facility (GFF). #AreWeReady for the next pandemic? The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a global wake-up call, rippling through the foundations of our global healthcare systems. It revealed stark disparities between nations and underscored the urgent need for progress. As we honor the lives lost and sacrifices made by healthcare professionals, we must learn from our shortcomings and forge a more resilient path forward in tackling future pandemics. Our healthcare systems, amidst the pandemic, were ill-prepared for the onslaught. The current healthcare system has the capacity to handle average demand, but pandemics require an unprecedented surge in resources. As a public health committee of the federation, I am proudly taking part in this crucial IPSF - International Pharmaceutical Students' Federation campaign to rally behind the hashtag #PandemicAccord for a safer future. In commemoration of the 4th anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic and in conjunction with the 9th Session of the World Health Organization Intergovernmental Negotiating Body on the pandemic accord (INB9), youth around the globe are sharing messages reflecting on their COVID-19 experiences and showing support to their leaders negotiating the pandemic accord. The recent conference at the University of Oxford Pandemic Sciences Institute underscored the critical importance of cross-sectoral collaboration during the interpandemic period. Experts like Helen Rees and Maria Van Kerkhove highlighted the increasing frequency of public health emergencies due to climate change and environmental pressures, and the importance of collaboration between scientists, policymakers, governments, funders and multilateral institutions to improve pandemic preparedness and response. Experts discussed how the “panic-neglect” cycle, which has historically characterized our approach to pandemics, must be broken as it is not only costly but also undermines our preparedness for future emergencies. In our volatile world, maintaining attention and resources for pandemic preparedness requires extraordinary effort and advocacy. The conference reinforced the need for sustained vigilance and proactive measures to ensure global health security.

WHO: Guidance for best practices for clinical trials! Objective This document responds to requests by the World Health Assembly to the Director-General in resolution WHA75.8 (2022) on strengthening clinical trials to provide high-quality evidence on health interventions and to improve research quality and coordination (3) to identify and propose best practices and other measures to strengthen the global clinical trial ecosystem and to review existing guidance and develop new guidance as needed on best practices for clinical trials. This guidance updates and adapts the previous work of the World Health Organization (WHO) on research capacity (4) for the context of well-designed and well-implemented clinical trials as framed in resolution WHA75.8 (2022). It aims to enhance clinical research efficiency, minimize research waste and provide guidance on sustained clinical trials that are always functional and active for endemic conditions and can pivot in time of emergency or pandemics. Section 1 provides an introduction. For key scientific and ethical considerations for well-designed and well- implemented trials the reader should refer directly to Section 2. For guidance on strengthening the clinical box trial ecosystem, including capacity development and addressing inefficiencies, refer to Section 3 and for recommendations to Member States, research funders and researchers refer to Annex 2. #who #clinical #investigation
