At Hadrian’s Torrance, California factory, the machines keep working after their operators go home. Swing by after hours and you’ll see them, displays aglow as they crank out parts in the dark. “We’re running 24-7. There’s a crew of people during the day and then it just runs itself,” said Chris Power, Hadrian’s 33-year-old founder and CEO. “That’s what our software does for manufacturing.” Power’s vision is somewhat different from other startups building tech to make other companies’ factories more efficient: He’s developed proprietary software to run Hadrian’s own factory, which allows it to churn out all types of precision metal parts for aerospace, space and defense companies faster, more efficiently and with fewer people. Thos Niles and I we are sitting in his office at Dragon Innovation in Autumn 2016, discussing my challenge with Upthere: how to go from blank page to production in the shortest time possible for a company's first connected consumer device. He idly tossed out this gem of wisdom: “Making the occasional bad decision won’t kill you. In fact, it’s unavoidable.?Not making decisions quickly is fatal.” While I'm certainly paraphrasing Thos, that conversation still sticks with me, and I've parroted it at least a hundred times. Mostly good decisions, made quickly, got us through DVT the following Spring, ready for production. Something yesterday reminded me of that world-class Engineering team led by Thomas Kistler, backed by our devoted partners at Igor Institute with help from Branch and Dragon Innovation.
