So how radical will the reform be for rural communities?
The Government is next week expected to announce the details of its planning reform. At District Councils' Network we're very pro-development. District councils are anxious to ensure there's homes for everyone in our community - homes that they can afford. "We want to work in partnership with the Government to unblock the barriers to development," says our Chairman, Samuel Chapman-Allen. You can read more of what we believe here ??

Local Government Director - Housing, Community Safety, Public Protection, Leisure, Health, Emergency Planning & Safeguarding
I have had the privilege to work in local government for almost 25 years. Having changed roles recently and moving to a London borough I have been reflecting on why local government matters more than ever. When we think about what makes a community thrive, local government plays a central role. It’s not just about policies and programs—it’s about building strong foundations for people to live, work, and grow together. Local government touches nearly every part of our daily lives from clean and safe streets, parks, libraries, and public spaces where neighbours connect, supporting small businesses and local economies, providing services like public transportation, and affordable housing. But beyond the services, local government fosters a sense of belonging. Whether it’s by organising community events, creating opportunities for public input, or responding to residents’ needs, it’s about showing that every voice matters. I’ve seen firsthand how these efforts bring people together, solve problems, and create lasting impact. It’s a reminder that when local government works well, communities can truly flourish. To all the local government leaders, officers, and community advocates out there—thank you for everything you do. Your work doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves, but it truly makes a difference. Let’s keep finding ways to support and uplift each other, because stronger communities start with us.

Join CHP and panelists (including CHP Chair Michael Santos) during Fair Housing Month to get an overview of the Fair Housing Act and the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing proposed rule. Panelists will discuss the history of the AFFH proposed rule, what it is about, why it is important for communities who have historically had to fight for safe and affirming housing, where it is now, and what role advocates can play in making sure this rule gets implemented. Panelists will also provide a quick orientation on advocating and pushing for rules to be enacted within the Biden Administration (as opposed to working with Congress to pass legislation). Attendees will learn what actions they can take so that the AFFH proposed rule gets released and enacted. Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander solutions fix Systemic problems. We need to invest more in decolonised approaches to solutions that Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander communities have fullstop. Its the only way to address glaringly obvious systemic failures.
‘Tough on crime’ responses have become the political default in Queensland, despite no evidence to suggest these punitive measures improve community safety. In our submission in response to the Inquiry into Youth Justice Reform in Queensland, we examine the urgent need for multipartisan support to build on what works in the state to break cycles of disadvantage, reduce reoffending, and genuinely build safer communities. Public libraries are pillars of democracy that must be protected at all costs. Beyond providing free access to information, art, and entertainment, libraries have evolved into community centers where people from all backgrounds gather. They assist with tax filing, job searches, unemployment claims, and serve as unofficial shelters for the homeless, offering free Wi-Fi, educational programs, and more. Some libraries even have staff trained to administer Narcan for opioid overdoses, addressing critical public health issues. Moriah Isabel Smith examines the threats libraries currently face, such as book bans and funding cuts, and explores existing and proposed legislation aimed at securing the future of these essential democratic institutions. Exciting to read the new piece by Catriona Maclay of New Local on nine things national government can learn from local government. Such as the 2023 Citizens Panel on Community Safety and Policing, (referenced in Recommendation 5) we facilitated with Revolving Doors in Liverpool. Read more about that here: https://lnkd.in/e4c3Qur6 Democracy, to work well and to rebuild trust, needs to flow up from the ground, not drip down from above. https://lnkd.in/dpbHYJZM
