The Lighthouse of Life In 20+ years, from the Gulf to Latin America, Africa to the USA, I’ve had the privilege of navigating through an extraordinary journey of cultures, experiences, and people. Like a lighthouse that guides ships through stormy seas, I’ve found that being a beacon for others—whether in times of triumph or tragedy—has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of life. As a former semi-professional blues and jazz saxophonist, I learned early on the beauty of expression, of sharing both the joys and sorrows with others. Music, much like life, is about the harmony of individual stories blending together to create something powerful. In my professional life, these lessons continued to echo, especially as I’ve seen firsthand how embracing diverse cultures drives high performance and integrity. The values instilled in me at Stonyhurst College—integrity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to others—have been my compass. I cherish the friendships formed with individuals from all walks of life, where challenges were embraced, and differences celebrated. Life is wonderful because it’s shared. Whether in business or music, it’s the moments where we lift others, where we act as lighthouses in someone else’s storm, that define a life of true value. My photo reflecting this at Chuseok last year in the Korea, sums it all up (we the shared a room together at Stonyhurst and are form 3 different lands, culture and personality and yet remain the close friends of life Joohyun Ahn Tapiwa Sikipa ) and please share this John Cartwright-Terry within your forum. #Integrity #Diversity #Leadership #StonyhursrtCollege #Inspiration #HighPerformance #GlobalLife #BluesLife #StonyhurstValues #chuseok

To my friends in education and youth programs, I encourage you to take a few minutes to read this great article on cultural humility coauthored by my colleague Kelley Haynes-Mendez, PsyD. "Rather than focusing solely on knowledge of another person's cultural background, cultural humility proposes an openness and humility when engaging with individuals from a cultural background different than our own." When we consider that culture is constantly evolving as a result of many factors - ethnicity, socioeconomic status, family composition, community, religion, ability status, and more - its important to go beyond knowledge of a specific element of culture to create relationships and classroom environments that are also evolving and truly promote inclusion. Great work, Kelley! #inclusion #safeandsupportiveschools #K12
"It is critically important for educators to be culturally aware and to implement culturally inclusive strategies." In our article on cultivating cultural humility, my co-author Jill Engelsmeier and I specifically focused on applying cultural humility in the classroom. Here's a link for free access to the full article!

Pictured is a photo of Old Main and Ashurst Auditorium. I grew up in Flagstaff and went to NAU. Old Main was the icon of the campus. But Ashurst is where I took piano lessons in the fourth grade! Yes, I could play the piano. But when you’re learning to play the piano, you make lots of mistakes – that’s expected because you’re the learner.?You don’t worry about it because you’re getting better even though your mistakes sound a bit rough. No mistakes, no improvement. It’s like that in business and in life.?We make mistakes and hopefully learn from them. However, when someone on your team makes a mistake, what is your response? Good questions will give you far more insight into the person and unlock their potential. You don’t point out how rough it sounds since most people already know that! You ask the right questions to evoke self-discovery. Self-discovery is where the real learning takes place. Claude Levi-Strauss said, “The wise man doesn’t give the right answers, he poses the right questions.” We ask great questions at Convene... Clarity, empowerment and resilience. All important in work and play. Our program, BC AdventureSmart’s, next summer series event is just around the corner & it’s a unique one! Some of our SAR groups have had Kenneth Wylie, Archetypal Founder facilitate workshops for them before. Our SAR members found this workshop incredibly insightful in terms of; 1) personal clarity, 2) empowerment, 3) and resiliency in the outdoors. This workshop will describe how applying these 3?? points directly affects group dynamics in outdoor adventures for everyone. You’re invited May 30. You’ll gain from Ken’s wisdom. https://lnkd.in/g3ufcNd5
